Erhard Krack
Erhard Krack (born January 9, 1931 in Danzig ; † December 13, 2000 in Berlin ) was Minister for the district-managed and food industry of the GDR and Lord Mayor of East Berlin . He was a member of the Central Committee of the SED .
Life
After training as a plumber, Krack graduated from high school. In 1951 he joined the SED. From 1952 he studied economics at the University of Rostock and worked as an operations assistant at the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde . In 1963 he became chairman of the district economic council in the Rostock district . From 1965 to 1974 he was a member of the Council of Ministers of the GDR as Minister for the district-managed and food industry. From 1974 to 1990 he was Lord Mayor of East Berlin. He was a member of the People's Chamber and a member of the Central Committee of the SED . As Lord Mayor, he campaigned against clearcut redevelopment and achieved that some districts, especially in Berlin-Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg, were redeveloped instead of demolished. He also initiated and pushed through the reconstruction of the Gendarmenmarkt , Friedrichstrasse and the Nikolaiviertel .
The turn

In the local elections in the GDR on May 7, 1989, Krack, as chairman of the election commission in East Berlin, was actively involved in manipulating this election in favor of the unified list under the leadership of the SED. In October 1989, on the square in front of the Red City Hall , thousands of citizens began Sunday talks about wishes for reform and democratization, which Krack faced. He later took part in the Berlin round table . When the Brandenburg Gate opened , he met the Governing Mayor of West Berlin, Walter Momper , and Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl .
Late years
On February 12, 1990, Krack announced his resignation and assumed responsibility for the fraud in the East Berlin local elections of 1989 . In 1993, taking into account his confession, he was sentenced to ten months' imprisonment, which was suspended. Krack accepted the sentence and called the election fraud "an act that is not excusable". The city council elected Christian Hartenhauer as his successor on February 27, 1990 , who temporarily took over the office of mayor until May 1990, the first free elections.
Erhard Krack found his final resting place in a Pankow cemetery .
