Herbert Fechner

Herbert Kurt Fechner (born August 27, 1913 in Berlin ; † December 28, 1998 there ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1967 to 1974 he was Lord Mayor of East Berlin .

Life

Fechner was the son of a carpenter. He learned the trade of a telegraph builder. In 1927 he became a member of the SAJ and the workers' sports movement . 1940 and 1943 to 1945 Fechner served in the Wehrmacht and was taken prisoner at the end of the war.

He joined the SPD in 1945, became a member of the SED in 1946 and secretary of the SED district leadership in Berlin-Lichtenberg in 1948 , and in 1950/51 first secretary of the SED district leadership in Berlin-Treptow . From 1950 to 1974 he was a member of the SED district leadership in Berlin. In 1951 he took over the public education and health and social services departments in the magistrate . From 1953 to 1961 he was Deputy Mayor of East Berlin and from 1954 to 1976 City Councilor . In 1957 he attended the party college of the SED . From 1961 to 1967 he was district mayor of Berlin-Köpenick , a member of the district assembly and the SED district leadership. In 1963 he took up a distance learning course at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam, which he graduated in 1965 with a degree in political science. From 1967 to 1974 he was Lord Mayor of East Berlin. In 1967 he was also a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED (until 1976) and a member of the People's Chamber (until March 1990). From 1974 he was chairman of the interparliamentary group and member of the presidium of the League for Friendship of Nations of the GDR.

From 1960 to 1990 Fechner held the office of chairman of the Bund Deutscher Segler (BDS), the sailing association of the GDR, and was a member of the standing committee of the World Association of the International Racing Sailing Union (IYRU) , which awarded him its highest honor in 1990.

His grave is in the Oberschöneweide forest cemetery .
