Fritz Schiller
Fritz Schiller (born February 19, 1912 in Königsberg , Prussia , † May 29, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ) and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime . He was the district mayor of Berlin-Köpenick .
Life
Schiller, son of a worker, attended elementary school and learned the trade of carpenter . In 1926 he joined the Socialist Workers' Youth and in 1930 the Communist Youth Association of Germany .
After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , Schiller took part in the communist resistance. He was arrested in 1933. Schiller spent two and a half years in the Lichtenburg and Sachsenhausen concentration camps . During the Second World War he had to do military service as a soldier and was taken prisoner of war .
After his release, Schiller joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). He found his wife and son, who had come from East Prussia as resettlers, and was assigned an apartment in Berlin-Zehlendorf in the American sector in November 1946 , from which they were to be evacuated in August 1949. He attended the party college "Karl Marx" at the Central Committee of the SED and then worked as a party functionary in the state of Brandenburg . From September 1951 to September 1961 he was district mayor of Berlin-Köpenick. From November 1958 he was also a member of the Magistrate of Greater Berlin .
Schiller died at the age of 80 and was buried in the grove of honor for the victims of National Socialism at the Baumschulenweg cemetery.
