Klaus Ulbricht

Klaus Ulbricht (born September 28, 1938 in Dresden ) is a German chemist and was long-time district mayor of the Köpenick district and, after the district reform in 2001, of the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin (1992-2006).

Life

Ulbricht studied chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden from 1956 to 1961 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin. In 1967 he received his doctorate from the Humboldt University in Berlin . Until 1991 he worked as a department head at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Adlershof . From 1986 to 1989 he was the immediate superior of the future Chancellor Angela Merkel .

In 1989 Ulbricht joined the SDP , which later became the SPD in the GDR. From 1990 to 1991 Ulbricht was politically active on a voluntary basis as a district councilor and parliamentary group leader of the SPD in the Berlin-Köpenick district council assembly . In 1991/1992 he worked there full-time as a district councilor for economics and finance and from May 1992 to the end of 2000 as district mayor of Berlin-Köpenick . With the merger of the two Berlin administrative districts Treptow and Köpenick to form the Treptow-Köpenick district on January 1, 2001, he became the district mayor of the largest Berlin district. Since the beginning of 2006 he has been working on a voluntary basis as district chairman of the SPD Treptow-Köpenick. On October 26, 2006, Ulbricht resigned as one of the longest-serving district mayors of Berlin. Successor in office was his party colleague Gabriele Schöttler .

In 2010, Klaus Ulbricht was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class, and in 2018 he received the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin . Ulbricht was a long-time member of the supervisory board of 1. FC Union Berlin until 2007 . He is chairman of the board of the Treptow-Köpenick community foundation. Klaus Ulbricht is married and has three grown children.
