Petitgrain is the name of a colorless to yellowish essential oil that is extracted from the leaves, twigs and unripe green fruits of the bitter orange . It is used as a heart note in perfume production and is obtained by steam extraction .

The basic chemical substances that make up petitgrain are geraniol , linalool , nerol , terpineol , geranyl acetate , linalyl acetate , myrcene , nerylacetate and trans - ocimen .
