Kurt Westphal (politician)
Kurt Westphal (born December 31, 1913 in Berlin ; † June 5, 1986 ) was a German politician ( SED ). From 1953 to 1958 he was Minister for the Food Industry of the GDR .
Life
Westphal grew up in a working-class family. After attending elementary school , he trained as a precision mechanic . In his youth he became a member of the workers' sports club "Fichte" and the KJVD . In 1930 Westphal joined the KPD. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , Westphal took part in the resistance and was temporarily imprisoned in 1934. After his release, he continued to take part in the illegal resistance struggle of the Kampfgemeinschaft für Rote Sporteinheit and the resistance group Werner Seelenbinder .
After the Second World War , in 1946 he became a member of the SED and head of department in the coordination office for industry and transport. From 1950 to 1954 he was a member of the People's Chamber . On June 11, 1953 he was first appointed Minister for the Food and Beverage Industry and sworn in as Minister for the Food Industry of the GDR on June 25, 1953 . He held this office until 1958.
In 1958 he went to the Rostock district , where he was chairman of the district economic council and deputy chairman of the district council from 1958 to 1962, and from 1958 to 1963 he was also a member of the district leadership of the SED there. Then he was deputy head of the workers and farmers inspection in the Rostock district. Since August 13, 1974 he was chairman of the committee of anti-fascist resistance fighters in the Rostock district and from March 28, 1976 until his death he was again a member of the Rostock SED district leadership.
He last lived in Warnemünde , was married and the father of two sons.
