The Medal of Merit of the National People's Army was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The medal was donated on June 1, 1956 in three stages. They were awarded for outstanding service and commitment to building and strengthening the National People's Army . Also for outstanding achievements in troop leadership as well as in political and military training as well as the education of members of the army. Last but not least, for excellent services in the care, maintenance and repair of technical equipment. The medal could also be awarded to non-members of the NVA, but also to military collectives.

Appearance and wearing style
The bronze , silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 35 mm showed three raised embossed heads in the middle of its obverse , which stand for the three armed forces of the NVA, land forces, people's navy and air forces, as well as the letters GDR below , which left and be flanked to the right by an oak leaf branch. The symbolism is surrounded by the inscription: FOR OUTSTANDING MERIT (above) NATIONAL PEOPLE'S ARMY (below). The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows in the middle the large state coat of arms of the GDR with the inscription: FOR THE PROTECTION (above) OF WORKERS AND FARMERS POWER (below) as well as two curved laurel branches crossed at the top. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a pentagonal pentagonal 25 mm wide red clasp with a 3 mm wide black, red and gold border. In the case of the silver and gold levels, a 2.5 mm wide silver or gold central stripe is also woven in.
