Founder: Council of Ministers of the GDR
Foundation year: 1974
Carrying method: left breast side

The honorary title of Honored Military Aviator of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of a medal on a ribbon with an associated interim clasp. The title was donated on August 1, 1974. It could be awarded for outstanding and special services in aviation activities, with excellent results in political and military training as well as for extraordinary services in increasing the combat readiness of the National People's Army . It was explicitly limited to pilots of the three branches of the NVA. Pilot performance class 1 and no self-inflicted flight accident were mandatory requirements for a possible award. The number of awards was limited to ten honorary degrees per year.

Appearance

The obverse of the gold-plated medal has the shape of a pentagon standing on top with a width of 31.5 mm and a height of 41.5 mm. At the lower tip is the national emblem of the NVA aircraft on a flag of the GDR that is turned 90 ° to the left and is enamelled in color. Most of the badge is taken up by a MiG-23 or MiG-21 , which soars steeply into the sky in front of a bright rising sun. To the left of the plane is a branch of laurel and to the right the slanted words VERDIENTER MILITÄRFLIEGER. The lapel, on the other hand, is blank and smooth.

Different variants were produced:

  • 1974–1976: Medal made of non-ferrous metal, gold-colored, lacquered, dimensions with arched eyelet 40.5 × 30 mm, smooth back. Medal on a small medal clip 14 × 25 mm
  • 1976–1989: Medal made of non-ferrous metal, gold-colored, lacquered, medal with round eyelet, on pentagonal clasp with interim clasp 14 × 25 mm, smooth back, also brass-plated, with patterned back

Carrying method

The badge was worn from 1976 on the upper left side of the chest on a pentagonal light blue covered clasp, which had a size of 25 × 14 mm. The interim clasp was of the same quality and also showed the gold-plated sovereign badge of the NVA aircraft with the state coat of arms of the GDR as a miniature.
