history
In the period between August 16 and September 25, 1952, the first (hunting) aviation regiment of the People's Police Air was set up with the code name KVP-Dienststelle 600/1 . While the squadron was on the former Air Force - airfield in Bautzen established, but already on 26 September at the Cottbus Air Base laid. Alteno airfield served as a decentralization airfield . Several structural changes and renaming of the squadron belonging to the Cottbus Aeroclub (1st Aeroclub) followed until it was taken over into the NVA on July 1, 1956. From September 1952 to October 1953, a unit of the Soviet Army was stationed at the site , providing assistance with flight training and in dealing with technology. In October 1952, Soviet flight instructors began practical training on the Jakowlew Jak-18 . Theoretical training for the MiG-15UTI began at the beginning of May 1953, but was discontinued due to the events of June 17, 1953 . The further training now initially related to the types Jak-18 and Jak-11 . In 1955 the first ten Jak-11 were taken over. Training on the MiG-15 was not continued until 1956/1957. In 1957, the squadron added the first ten MiG-17Fs to its fleet. From 1959 the 3rd Fighter Squadron began training Il-28 pilots for target display flights. In 1961 it was renamed to Jagdfliegergeschwader 1. At the end of 1966, the squadron was fully equipped with MiG-21s.
On October 7, 1967, the squadron received the honorary designation Fritz Schmenkel .
- Relocation from Cottbus to Holzdorf
On November 23, 1982, the squadron relocated to one of the most modern airfields of the NVA, today's Holzdorf air base of the Bundeswehr Air Force. The three developed decentralization areas created there provided space for 46 aircraft protection structures of the type GDF-12 (closed cover for aircraft) as well as for eight open aircraft cover (ODF).
The Aviation Technical Battalion 1 (FTB-1) "Willi Budich" and the Intelligence and Air Traffic Control Battalion 1 (NFB-1) also moved to the new wing location in Holzdorf.
With the relocation of the squadron the relocation of the squadron command post from the Striesow location to the Holzdorf airfield was connected. This command post was temporarily housed in a stone barrack under the flight control. A data transmission via RL-30 from FuTK Dahme / Mark to the command post was set up to transmit the air situation picture . In the nearby Schönewalde , a new command post for the JG-1 and the FuTB-41 was built from 1981 to 1983. However, this command post did not go into operation until October 1983 - this then involved a relocation of the squadron command post from Holzdorf airfield to Schönewalde. This bunker Schoenewalde later became known as Control and Reporting Center expanded and today through the use of guide region 3 of the Air Force of the Armed Forces used.

Aircraft types
In JG-1, aircraft from the Soviet design office MiG were used almost exclusively . With the exception of the Jak-11 and the Jak-18, all the types used were jet aircraft. The letters behind the type numbers identify the individual version of the aircraft type.
Period of use | Aircraft type |
---|---|
from 1955 | Jak-11 |
1953-1956 | Jak-18 |
from 1956 | MiG-15UTI and MiG-17F |
from 1957 | MiG-17PF |
from 1965 | MiG-21PF, MiG-21SPS, MiG-21SPS / K, MiG-21US, MiG-21UM and MiG-21MF |
MiG-21PF were no longer in the inventory in the 1980s. The majority of the MiG-21SPS and SPS-K were built between 1967 and 1969, the associated school machines around 1971. The MiG-21MF came in 1987 in exchange for MiG-21SPS and SPS-K from the JG-7 before it was disbanded.
resolution
The last flight service of the JG-1 took place on September 26, 1990. The last squadron roll call took place on October 2, 1990. With the decommissioning of the NVA in 1990, the squadron was dissolved.
The JG-1 was the only fighter pilot's association in the GDR that existed from its formation in 1952 until its dissolution in 1990/1991.
