Military career

Education and Uses

On May 23, 1952, Baarß joined the armed organs of the GDR as a volunteer applicant and completed a course in officer training at the People's Police School in Pirna . This was followed by the command for course X , the special course for the training of future military pilots of the NVA Air Force (LSK / LV) until October 1953 , in which he received his personal nickname "Franz" - which is usual in aviation circles.

After his return in November 1953, he was employed for the first time as a squadron commander of the Aeroclub in Cottbus , the forerunner organization of the later Jagdfliegergeschwader 1 (JG-1) of the NVA air force , until 1955 . In 1954 Baarß became a member of the SED .

1956 to 1959 he rose to the rank of captain from deputy commander to commander of JG-1. He was then commanded to study at the Military Academy of the Air Force in the Soviet Union until 1960 .

After his return, Baarß advanced to the position of deputy commander for fighter pilots of the 3rd LVD of the NVA air forces and from 1965 to 1968 he was commander of JG-9 . He then attended the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden until 1971 . After successfully completing his studies, Colonel Baarß was appointed commander of the JBG-31 . He held this post until 1973. This was followed by a general staff assignment in the LSK / LV command as deputy head of training fighter pilots in air defense until 1978 . He was a pilot and fighter pilot in performance class I with more than 2000 flight hours.

general

On October 7, 1978, Baarß was appointed major general. Also in 1978 he became “Deputy Head of LSK / LV for Air Force”. From 1981 to 1986 he was then appointed to the newly created post of deputy head of the LSK / LV for training front-line and army pilots . On March 1, 1986, he was promoted to lieutenant general. From 1986 to 1988 he held the post of Deputy Head of LSK / LV for Air Force Training .

From 1988 to April 18, 1990, Baarß was the chief inspector of the NVA and then until his release from the NVA on September 30, 1990 as the agent for military reform (winding up the NVA) in the Ministry of Disarmament and Defense .

Aviation accident

During his service in the LSK / LV command, Major General Baarß suffered an aircraft accident as a pilot on February 21, 1983. For example, a MiG-23 MF (No. 564, factory number 0390213089) was damaged by a fire at the rear of the machine that resulted from an engine failure. Baarß landed the plane safely anyway. The machine was then brought to the officers' college of the air forces / air defense "Franz Mehring" in Kamenz as a teaching aid and has been in the Aviation Museum in Cologne-Butzweilerhof since 1993 .
