history

The fighter-bomber squadron was officially set up on October 1, 1971, initially as JBG-31 at the Drewitz site. It was the beginning of the 1st Air Defense Division of the air forces of the NVA allocated. This was preceded by demands of the United High Command of the Warsaw Pact , based on the experiences of the previous Middle East wars, in the early 1970s to also set up their own bombing forces in the GDR. The squadron was initially equipped with three squadrons of MiG-17F . These came from freed stocks of the fighter squadron converted to MiG-21 . The MiG-17F were equipped with suspension points under the wings for containers with unguided rockets and free-fall bombs. MiG-15 UTI were available as school machines.

The squadron was given its traditional name " Klement Gottwald " on October 6, 1976 .

In 1979 the squadron began to be converted to MiG-23BN and MiG-23UB. The conversion only affected two squadrons. The former 3rd squadron with MiG-17F was relocated to the Laage airfield for the installation of the JBG-77 and converted there to Su-22M4 . Since losses were not replaced, the squadron never reached full strength in the 1980s.

From November 1, 1982, the squadron was part of the commanding body of the Front and Army Aviation Forces (FAFK) , which later became the commanding body of the Front and Army . Military Transport Air Force (FO FMTFK), subordinated. At this time the name was also changed to JBG-37. This submission was a peace structure to ensure flight training as well as material and technical security. With the triggering of corresponding levels of higher combat readiness , the JBG-37 was intended and ordered for operational subordination to the commander of the Soviet 16th Air Army .
