history

The naval aviation squadron was set up under the strictest secrecy at the Rostock-Laage location from August 1985. The formation was completed on November 27, 1987.

The troop flag was handed over on February 29, 1988.

It was not until October 6, 1989 that the squadron was given the traditional name " Paul Wieczorek " after a mutinous member of the naval aviation forces of the Imperial Navy who died during the November Revolution of 1918 . Before that, the existence of this squadron in the GDR was not officially known.

From July 20, 1990, the ranks of the People's Navy were introduced in order to show themselves to the outside world as a naval aviation squadron. In peacetime, however, the squadron was subordinate to the commanding body of the front-line and military transport air forces of the NVA air forces for the purpose of flying training and material security in terms of aircraft technology. The operational subordination for the squadron lay with the chief of the naval aviation forces in the Volksmarine command. However, the chief of naval aviation forces could not directly command operations. Every combat mission of the MFG-28 was to be conducted by the Volksmarine via the combat command center (GFZ) LSK of the Kdo LSK / LV. This submission was a peace structure to ensure flight training as well as material and technical security. With the triggering of corresponding levels of higher combat readiness , the MFG-28 was intended and ordered for operational subordination to the commander of the Soviet 16th Air Army .

Before reunification, September 27, 1990 was the squadron's last flight day, on which the planes were no longer allowed to take off, only to taxi. On this day, a machine with a blue-yellow-red paint, the colors of the new state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was presented.

On December 31, the squadron was officially dissolved.
