The Jagdfliegergeschwader 9 (JG-9) was the honorary title of Heinrich Rau and was a flying unit in regimental strength of the NVA air forces in direct subordination of the 3rd Air Defense Division .

history

JG-9, NVA Fliegerhorst Peenemünde
( MiG-Shelter type GDF, left 1 × open, right 2 × closed, far right muni-bunker)
Practice flight on September 11, 1975

The forerunner of the JG-9 was the 3rd department of the 2nd Aero Club of the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP) established in December 1953  at the Cottbus-Drewitz airfield . On August 28, 1954, she was renamed the 3rd command of the 2nd Aero Club of the KVP. When it was taken over by the NVA on December 26, 1956, it was managed as the 9th Air Wing of the 3rd Air Division. From May 16, 1961, the squadron was relocated to Peenemünde airfield in the north of the island of Usedom , where it was renamed Jagdfliegergeschwader 9 (JFG-9; later JG-9) on June 9, 1961. The airfield used, which already belonged to the former test site of the Air Force " Peenemünde-West ", was considerably expanded and expanded between 1958 and 1961.

On the 10th anniversary of the NVA, the JG-9 was the first fighter squadron to receive the honorary name Heinrich Rau on March 1, 1966 .

Air controlling and operational management of the fighter aircraft were carried out from the Pudagla command post at the time .

At the end of the 1980s, due to the exclusion of naval forces from the Vienna disarmament negotiations , consideration was given to integrating the JG-9 into the People's Navy as a naval fighter squadron. Since the MiG-23 was not suitable for this, it was not done.

On September 13, 1990, during a flight demonstration in front of the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag with a MiG-23ML at the JG-9, a fatal aircraft accident occurred when Major Sascha Syrbe crashed with his plane after losing spatial orientation and had a fatal accident. It was the last such aircraft accident of the NVA. The accident pilot left behind his wife, the current district administrator of the Ostvorpommern district, Barbara Syrbe , and three children.

The last flight day was on September 26, 1990. The last flight of an NVA aircraft took place on September 27, 1990 in JG-3 Preschen with a MiG-29A (604).
