JG-2 Trollenhagen |
history
The forerunner of the JG-2 was the 2nd division of the 1st Aero Club of the Barracked People's Police established in December 1953 at the Cottbus-Nord airfield . On December 1, 1954, it was renamed the 2nd command of the 1st Aero Club of the Barracked People's Police. On July 1, 1956, the name was changed to Fliegergeschwader 2 of the 1st Air Division . At the same time, it was relocated to Rothenburg Airport . When it was taken over by the NVA on March 1, 1957, it was run as the 2nd Air Wing of the 1st Air Division. From October 1961 the squadron was relocated to the Trollenhagen airfield in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, today 's Neubrandenburg airport , where it was renamed Jagdfliegergeschwader 2 (JFG 2; later JG-2) on November 1, 1961. This was accompanied by a change in the structure of the air force. The JG-2 was now operationally subordinated to the 3rd Air Defense Division with staff in Neubrandenburg .
On February 26, 1971, the squadron was given the traditional name "Yuri Gagarin".
On the decision of the GDR government to dissolve a fighter squadron in 1989 as a contribution to disarmament, the JG-2 received younger and better equipped MiG-21MF from the JG-7 to be dissolved in exchange for older MiG-21SPS / K. The last flight service took place on September 26, 1990.
