Wolfgang Büttner (General)

Wolfgang Büttner (born August 2, 1931 in Schleiz-Oschitz ) is a former German officer . He was major general and chief of the air forces of the command of the land forces of the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR .

Life

The son of a carpenter and sculptor completed an apprenticeship as a bookbinder after attending elementary school from 1946 to 1949 . On August 28, 1949 he became a trainee in the German People's Police . In 1949/50 he served in the VP offices of Brandenburg, Löbau and Apolda. From 1950 to 1952 he attended the VP Officers School in Naumburg and from 1952 to 1953 a special course in the USSR . From 1953 to 1954 he was a pilot in the CIP office Bautzen II and from 1955 to 1959 first deputy, then squadron commander in Fliegergeschwader 9.

In 1956, when the NVA was founded, Büttner became a member of the SED . From 1959 to 1961 he was deputy commander for aviation training and from December 1961 to August 1968 as major commander of the NVA's 8th Fighter Wing. After studying at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy from 1968 to 1970, from which he graduated as a graduate military scientist, he was in command of Fighter Wing 2 with the rank of lieutenant colonel until 1973 . In 1973 Büttner became deputy commander for fighter pilots of the 3rd Air Defense Division, in 1976 deputy, then until 1981 head of the Air Force Department of the LaSK Command. From December 1981 to August 1983 he acted as divisional commander of the command body of the front and army aviation forces and from 1983 to September 1990 as chief of the air forces of the LaSK command.

On February 27, 1984 he was appointed major general by the Chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker . Büttner was released from the NVA on September 30, 1990.
