history
The Angerdorf, founded by German and Flemish colonists around 1200, developed into an agricultural town and received city rights in 1474. In 1346 the place was named as Schonewalde, later also Schonwalda. The name is of German origin and means village in / on the beautiful forest. The city belonged to the Saxon office of Schweinitz , which became an administrative unit in the newly formed Kingdom of Saxony from 1806 . After the Wars of Liberation , the city finally came to the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony in 1815 and was incorporated into the district of Schweinitz in the administrative district of Merseburg in 1816 . In 1950 the Schweinitz district was renamed Herzberg District , which in 1952 was assigned to the Cottbus district of the GDR . In 1992 the Brandenburg office of Schönewalde was formed. In 1993, the district of Herzberg was opened in the course of the district reform in what is now the district of Elbe-Elster . On December 31, 2001 the office Schönewalde was dissolved. The municipalities of Themesgrund , Wildberg , Heideeck , which are now officially affiliated , and the now free city have formed the area of the town of Schönewalde since then.
