The Schweinitz office was an administrative unit of the Electorate of Saxony, which was converted into a kingdom in 1806 . The Schweinitz office was affiliated with the Kurkreis . It emerged from the Schweinitz reign , which had come to the Ascanian Duchy of Saxony in 1362.

Until it was ceded to Prussia in 1815, as a Saxon office it formed the spatial reference point for the collection of sovereign taxes and compulsory services , for the police , jurisdiction and military service .

Geographical expansion

The area of the Schweinitz office framed the neighboring Annaburg office throughout the north and west. The exclaves of the Schweinitz office were to the east and south of the Annaburg office, so that this office was almost completely enclosed by the Schweinitz office. The northern part of the office was traversed by the Schweinitzer Fliess and the Black Elster . In the southern part of the office, the Elbe formed the western border in some sections. The confluence of the Schweinitzer Fliess in the Black Elster and its confluence with the Elbe were in the territory of the office. Most of the official area is now in the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The eastern part with the cities of Schönewalde and Herzberg (Elster) is in the state of Brandenburg . Some places of the southern exclaves near Torgau and north of Belgern are now in the Free State of Saxony .

history

The Schweinitz castle district, which dates back to the 12th century and which comes from the legacy of the Counts of Brehna , was the origin of the rule. In 1182 this passed into the area of Niederlausitz ( Mark Lausitz ). After the archbishopric of Magdeburg had been given feudal sovereignty , the rule fell to the Ascan duchy of Saxony-Wittenberg in 1362 . After the Wittenberg line of the Ascanians died out, the office fell to the Wettins in 1362 . After the division of Leipzig in 1485, the office belonged to the Ernestine line of the Wettins as part of the Kurlande . Since the defeat of the Ernestines in the Schmalkaldic War in 1547 ( Wittenberg surrender ), it was owned by the Albertines . As a result of the defeat of the Kingdom of Saxony , the Congress of Vienna in 1815 decided to assign territories to Prussia. a. concerned the entire Kurkreis with its offices. The Schweinitz office was added to the Merseburg administrative region of the Prussian province of Saxony . Most of the official area came to the newly formed district of Schweinitz . Smaller parts in the south were added to the Torgau district.
