Johann George Schreiber (also Johann Georg Schreiber ; born December 10, 1676 in Spremberg , Oberlausitz , † July 31, 1750 in Leipzig ) was a German engraver , cartographer and publisher .

Life

Johann George Schreiber was born as the sixth of seven children of the married couple Hans and Anna Schreiber in Spremberg. His father was a carpenter. The family lived respected, but in very modest circumstances.

Schreiber was the first German map publisher in the Electorate of Saxony .

In 1700 he was commissioned to draw up a plan of the city of Bautzen , on which all the houses in the city should be seen. This copper engraving , later called Schreiberplan , was completed by him on August 12, 1700.

After his death in 1750, his wife and son Johann Christian Schreiber continued to run the business and either made new engravings or issued them for the first time. These engravings therefore contain the references "Schreiber's soulful widow" or "JG Schreiber's soulful heirs" (e.g. card Der Sächsische Cur-Creis ... , 1752) or "Johann Christian Schreiber" in the title.

Appreciation

In his honor, after the reunification in 1990 in Neusalza-Spremberg, the cross connection between Bahnhofstrasse and Obermarkt, the former Ernst Thälmann-Str. , in George-Schreiber-Str. renamed, and on the north wall of the savings bank a memorial plaque is attached with the following inscription: Johann George Schreiber (1676–1750). Important cartographer, geographer, engraver and publisher, son of our Spremberg district. This is followed by five distinctive biographical key data.
