Lutz Mohr

Herbert Lutz Mohr (born May 28, 1944 in Neusalza-Spremberg ) is a German historian and publicist . He lives with his family in the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald .

Life and professional development

Lutz Mohr was raised alone by his mother Hertha Mohr , as his father Alois Mohr had died in 1945 on the Remagen bridge . From 1950 to 1960 he attended the elementary and polytechnic high school "Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi" under director Gunther Leupolt in Neusalza-Spremberg. From 1960 to 1963 he learned the trade of steel ship builder at VEB Roßlauer Schiffswerft, today Sachsenberg-Werke in Roßlau . He then attended maritime qualification courses lasting several weeks in 1963 and 1964 at what was then the GST Sea Sports School Greifswald-Wieck, which was headed by Helmut Sieger at the time . He then served from 1964 to 1967, most recently as a staff sailor with the 4th Flotilla of the People's Navy of the GDR in Warnemünde , which at the time was commanding Captain Herbert Bernig . During this time he began his research on the history of the Vikings and seafaring and published it in various newspapers, magazines and publications. Following his naval service, he went on ships of the Deutsche Seereederei Rostock (DSR), including MS Zinnowitz under Captain Hein Werner .

University degree

As a member of the FDJ (1960 until 1975) he graduated at the Youth Academy "Wilhelm Pieck" the FDJ under director Werner Haltinner on Bogensee , community Wandlitz , near Bernau bei Berlin in 1969 to 1970, a direct study of social sciences , in 1973 took place then a course lasting several months at the officers' college of the Volksmarine Karl Liebknecht in Stralsund , which at the time commanded Rear Admiral Heinz Irmscher , and the appointment as reserve officer . After that he was called up several times for reservist service in various Volksmarine units, so u. a. Marine port (TSL 18, oil port ) Greifswald- Ladebow under the command of frigate captain Walter Schmidt (1930–2017). In the following time, Lutz Mohr mastered an external study of history with Konrad Fritze at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , which he graduated in 1982 as a historian. His diploma thesis is entitled: On the political history of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald with special consideration of its connections to the narrower territory in the years 1949 to 1961 .

Historian, museologist, publicist

As a research assistant and later acting director of the Museum of the City of Greifswald from 1975 to 1980, he dealt with a large number of finds and documents, which captivated his interest in research into seafaring and the history of the Vikings even more. He was particularly fascinated by the issue of the controversial Yomswikings in Pomerania . As part of his museum work, Lutz Mohr founded the Neue Greifswalder Museumhefte edition, together with the art educator Alexander Schott , which grew to fourteen publications on regional history during its existence from 1976 to 1986. In addition, he published numerous articles for the GDR's naval calendar as well as for the editions Jahrbuch der Schiffahrt and Urania Universum . From 1980 he worked as a vocational school teacher and was also a class leader at the company vocational school “Dr. Salvador Allende ”of the“ Rostock Engineering, Civil Engineering and Transport Construction Combine ”(ITVK) in Greifswald.

In addition to his museum and educational activities, he was involved as a voluntary trainer for the Society for Sport and Technology , of which he was a member from 1960 to 1989. During the summer vacation from 1983 to 1987 he took part in training trips on the Baltic Sea with the sailing training ship Wilhelm Pieck , today Greif , under Captain Helmut Stolle and the motor training ship Artur Becker under Captain Herbert Breitsprecher (1938-1988) of the GST naval school “August Lütgens “ In Greifswald-Wieck to Lithuania .

Projects and club activities

As early as the early 1990s, he made a name for himself with the circumnavigator and publicist Burkhard Pieske on Viking history. In October 1993 they started the " Vineta experiment" in Koserow on the island of Usedom . Here the proof was provided that the Vikings knew how to transport their ships over land over longer distances more than 1000 years ago. At that time, Lutz Mohr became a member of several circles of friends and associations that corresponded to his interests, such as Iceland Friends Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Greifswald (1990–1993); Society of Friends of Iceland (GdFI) e. V., Hamburg under the chairmanship of Consul Oswald Dreyer-Eimbcke (1994–2006); German-Icelandic Society (DIG) e. V., Cologne (1994-2004); German-Faroese friends e. V. Düsseldorf (1990–2002) and International Stone Cross Research (ISF), Regensburg (1996–2000). Furthermore, in 2003 he was co-founder of the Association for Experiencing History of the Mare Balticum e. V. , Stralsund and acted as a mentor of the association until 2006. Since 2007, he has been a member of the association Bücherfreunde Greifswald e. V. From 1996 to 2000 he was also an honorary press officer for the Pomeranian Artists Association (PKB) e. V., headed by the Greifswald artist Helmut Maletzke (1920–2017), and received the association's certificate of honor in 1999 for his journalistic work.

From 1998 to spring 2017 Lutz Mohr worked closely with the Stralsund artist Eckhard Buchholz , inspiring and advising him on the genre of history paintings. On this basis, the large-format eight-part “ Viking Cycle”, which was shown in 2003 in the USA , and in the following years (until 2016) another fifteen historical paintings on the history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were created on this basis . Due to a long illness, their almost twenty years of collaboration ended in 2017. In addition, since 2008 Lutz Mohr has been involved as a corresponding member of the “Local History” interest group of Kultur- und Heimatfreunde Neusalza-Spremberg e. V. for further research into the local history of his hometown. As an author he enriches the edition " History and Stories from Neusalza-Spremberg ", which has existed since 1999, and the periodical "Oberlausitzer Familien-Kalenderbuch" published by the Oberlausitzer Verlag . In June 2015 the historian celebrated the golden wedding anniversary with his wife Gisela .
