Burghard Pieske (* 1944 in Lübeck ) is a German adventurer and circumnavigator.

Life

At the age of 16, he began to study in the merchant navy , where he eventually acquired a captain's license . Subsequently, from 1966 to 1969, the son of the teacher and school councilor Gerhard Pieske and the folklorist Christa Pieske studied education and geography and became a civil servant as a teacher. A few years later he gave up his official status to sail around the world.

From 1977 to 1987 he sailed around the world on the Shangri-La catamaran, which he built himself within three years, and published his experiences in three books. As part of this circumnavigation of the world, he was awarded the Trans-Ocean Prize in 1980 for the first east-west circumnavigation of Cape Horn in a yacht flying the German flag .

In 1991 and 1992 he traveled across the Atlantic on a replica Viking ship , the Wiking Saga , in the footsteps of Leif Eriksson . Intermediate ports or landing sites during the adventurous sailing trip were: Egersund / Norway, Lerwick / Shetlands, Vestmanna / Faroe Islands; Seyðisfjörður , Raufarhöfn , Bolungarvik and Ísafjörður / all Iceland; Ammassalik , Ikkatteq , Isortoq , Timmiarmiut , Aappilattoq , Nanortalik , Narsarsuaq , Uunartoq , Brattahlid , Hvalsey , Julianehab and Frederikshab , all Greenland; Makkovik / Labrador / Canada and finally L'Anse aux Meadows / Newfoundland / Canada.

The replica of the historical boat from Northern Europe from around the year 1000 was made in advance in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shipyard "Poeler Bootswerft GmbH" in the course of 1990/91 in Kirchdorf on the island of Poel in the Wismar Bay . The launch and naming of the modern Viking ship took place on May 4, 1991. With the Wiking Saga, the Poeler boat builders succeeded in creating a masterpiece of Nordic shipbuilding, which shortly afterwards was to prove itself masterfully in the storms of the North Atlantic . After completing the planned “Viking North Atlantic Route ”, which began on July 24, 1991 in the Danish port of Thyborön and ended in New York at the end of September 1992 , Burghard Pieske and his crew started the “Viking experiment on the island” project on October 9, 1993 Usedom ”at its narrowest point (330 m) between Lüttenort am Achterwasser and the Baltic Sea beach of Koserow . The patronage of Pieske's “Viking Experiment” was the then Minister of Health and Social Affairs of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - Klaus Gollert . On the basis of the historical records, the proof should be provided that 1000 years ago the northerners were able to transport their seaworthy ships by muscle and horse power both pulling and rolling certain distances over land, including obstacles, and also in some way "Gliding technique" and without any horsepower. The proof was successful. In May 2019 the Wiking Saga was hung in the boathouse restaurant "Bubba Svens" of the Hotel Krønasår and can be viewed there by guests.

In 1998 he set out from the Pacific island of Tonga alone with the open sloop Bounty Bay to retrace the voyage of Captain William Bligh after the mutiny on the Bounty .

From 2006 to 2008 he was a partner in the Euro-Viking project , which allowed European young people to sail around Europe in replica Viking ships.

Today Pieske is a freelancer for Yacht magazine . He lives in Lübeck.
