The Essigberg is at least 597.5  m above sea level. NHN high northwestern foothills of the Hohes Gras mountain ( 614.8  m ) in the Hohen Habichtswald , part of the Habichtswälder Bergland , in the Kassel district in northern Hesse . It is the third highest elevation in the Hoher Habichtswald mountain range and the fourth highest in the Habichtswald Nature Park .

The Essigberg is known nationwide as the location of the 186 m high Habichtswald telecommunications tower , the second tallest type tower in Germany.

The wooded summit of the Essigberg rises in the district of Kassel in the area of ​​the municipality of Habichtswald around 3.7 km southeast of the district Ehlen and around 700 m west of the extreme western border of the independent city of Kassel . It is about 1 km to the southeast to reach the high grass (distances as the crow flies ).

Well hidden in the forest , only gently rising and extensive hilltop, the Essigberg is hardly noticeable on the generally quite high Habichtswald. Along with other streams, the ancestor rises on the Essigberg .

The Essigberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34) or in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) to the natural area High Habichtswald (342.00).

Watershed

The "Diemel-Fulda-Wasserscheide", which is part of the very elongated Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed , runs over the summit of the Essigberg : The water of the short streams (e.g. the Laubach ; in the lower reaches of the Lubach ) that flow from the direction of the mountain to the west or north-west for the time being, sooner or later reaches the Weser tributary Diemel via the warmth . In contrast, the streams that run from the mountain or from neighboring highlands in northeastern, eastern and southeastern directions, such as Ahne , Drusel and Bauna , tend towards the Weser tributary Fulda .

Telecommunication tower Habichtswald

The Habichtswald telecommunications tower of Deutsche Telekom AG , which was built in the mid-1970s, is located on the Essigberg . It stands at 594.2  m and is 186 m high. He is a type tower and a transmitter of the hessian broadcast on radio and TV equipped. The public is prohibited from entering.

Possibility of viewing

From the Essigberg you can enjoy beautiful views. For example, from the hiking car park near the tower and its surroundings , you can see past Wattenberg , Weidelsburg , Isthaberg , Burghasunger Berg and Großem Bärenberg to the distant Rothaargebirge with the Upland . There is a shelter between the parking lot and the tower .

Many paths on which you can walk to the neighbor Hohes Gras , for example , invite you to take walks and hikes on the Essigberg . The extra tour H3 of the Habichtswaldsteig leads west around the mountain . In the cold season, when there is enough snow , numerous people come up the mountain with their sledges to toboggan south of the hilltop and telecommunications tower .

Directions

The Essigberg can be reached by car via the wide connecting road Ehlen – Kassel (from east to west called “Druseltalstraße”, “Im Druseltal” and “Ehlener Straße”; Landesstraße  3298). Coming from the east or west, turn a little west of the highest point of this road in a north direction onto the large parking lot for hikers (not signposted) not far from the telecommunications tower. You can also travel by KVG buses .
