Lookout tower with transmitter and mountain restaurant

Description and history

Building block for 1 RM from the Hessian Mountain Association for the maintenance and expansion of the Hohe Gras House from December 1924

In the summit area of the mountain there is the Hohes Gras observation tower with a transmitter and the Hohes Gras mountain restaurant adjacent to the tower . Both stone buildings are in the Kassel city area; The border with the municipality of Schauenburg runs along the forest path that goes directly south in a west-east direction.

The tower is 30.7 m high measured to the roof; The antennas of the transmitter are located above this. The area at the base of the tower is 614.7  m high. Its viewing platform is at a height of 27.7 m (24.7 m original tower height plus 3 m elevation from 1969), which is 642.4  m above sea level. Corresponds to NHN .

The foundation stone of the tower was laid on May 24, 1888, and the tower was inaugurated on May 18, 1890. The barracks required for the construction work were initially retained and allowed regular serving to the ever-increasing number of visitors. Therefore an application was made for a mountain restaurant with a beer garden , the completion of which followed on November 15, 1904.

In 1925, weather-related damage led to the tower being closed to visitors immediately and the first “complete renovation”. The Hessisch-Waldeckische Gebirgs- und Heimatverein acquired the property in 1929. During the Second World War (1939-1945) the tower was damaged by aerial bombs in December 1944 and confiscated in April 1945 by the American military administration.

In 1947, the Kassel post office took over a transmitter installed above the tower's observation deck - later also used by the Hessischer Rundfunk (hr). The building has been accessible to hikers again since 1953. For the transmitter and to increase the viewing height, PreussenElektra (PREAG) provided the tower with a modern structure that was not architecturally adapted to the tower substructure from 1969 to 1970 .

The second “complete renovation” of the tower took place from 1985 to 1987.

Possibility of viewing

For decades, the viewing platform has mostly been dominated by the crowns of numerous trees, which severely restrict and interrupt the all-round view. However, when the visibility is good, you can see the Rothaargebirge in the west, parts of the Eggegebirge in the northwest, the Köterberg and Solling in the north, Reinhardswald and Harz in the northeast, Kaufunger Wald and Hoher Meißner in the east as well as partly the Rhön in the southeast between branches . In the immediate vicinity you can see the peaks of Wattenberg , Isthaberg and Großem Bärenberg (with Bärenberg tower ) as well as the nearby Habichtswald telecommunications tower on the Essigberg .

Uhlenstein

Between the Hohen Gras and the Ahrensberg lies the Uhlenstein  ( ) in the district of Kassel in the municipality of Habichtswald , a gentle hill of at least 607.5  m , the wooded landscape of which slopes down towards the south into the municipality of Schauenburg. A water tank stands on the Uhlenstein , to the north of which the former training site Ehlen extends .

Hercules Railway

A coming from New Holland upcoming stretch of from 1902 to 1966 operated Herkulesbahn led from 1918 past the goat head with the colliery Red cleats for High Grass . It carried goods there and, from 1925 until the section was finally closed in 1940, also people. Other routes also ran to Brasselsberg and Hercules, which gave it its name .

Hiking and sports

Tobogganists on their way to the toboggan slope on Hohen Gras

Numerous forest paths invite you to go for walks and hikes on the Hohe Gras ; Among other things, the Herkulesweg and the extra tour H3 of the Habichtswaldsteig runs over the Hohe Gras and past the Uhlenstein . In winter, the east-south-east slope of the mountain attracts visitors as a winter sports area : on the south-east slope there is a ski lift (t-bar lift) with a 510 m long ski slope . A toboggan run of roughly the same length runs parallel to the slope . Both have a difference in altitude of around 80 m. Since May 16, 2009 there has been the Kassel climbing forest near the summit .

Directions

The Hohe Gras can be reached by car via the wide Kassel - Ehlen road (from east to west called Druseltalstraße , Im Druseltal and Ehlener Straße ; Landesstraße  3296). Coming from the east or west, at around the highest point of the road - following the signs to Hohen Gras - turn south onto a former Panzerstraße and then onto a road to the parking lot on the hilltop. You can also take the KVG buses , which stop about 350 m north-west of the hilltop.
