The Eggegebirge (also called the Egge for short ) is one to about 464  m above sea level. NHN high low mountain range of the Lower Saxony mountainous region in the districts of Höxter , Lippe and Paderborn in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

Surname

The term "harrow" is a general Low German designation for elongated hill crests or ridges; linguistic counterparts are the " Siepen / Siefen / Seifen " (for the notched valleys accompanying the harrows ). Up until the 17th century, the Egge Mountains, together with the Teutoburg Forest , which ran to the northwest, bore the name Osning .

Geographical location

The Eggegebirge takes place in Lower Saxony Bergland as part of the Upper Weserbergland from the southeast end of the Teutoburg Forest in Horn-Bad Meinberg in the north to the Valley of the far south-western Rothaargebirge springing Diemel in Scherfede in the south and to the north end of the Sauerland . It is located around 15 km east of the city of Paderborn .

The interface to the Teutoburg Forest, which runs to the northwest, is located directly north-northwest of the Lippe Velmerstot ( 441.4  m above sea level ) at the Silbermühle ( 249.1  m ) or the Silberbach , which flows from Veldrom north-northeast to Leopoldstal . To the northwest of the valley lies the southeast flank of the Knieberg ( 365.1  m ), which, along with the Buchenberg (approx.  385  m ) to the south of it, but still west of the Silberbachtal, is one of the southeastern mountains of the northwest-facing Teutoburg Forest. From this near point, the Egge Mountains stretches southwards, including the Lippische ( 441.4  m above sea level ) and also the Prussian Velmerstot (approx.  464  m ), the Hausheide ( 441.4  m ; between Altenbeken in the northwest and Bad Driburg in the southeast) and the Bierbaums Nagel ( 431.4  m ) to the Hellberg ( 343.1  m ) near Scherfede , which is at the beginning of the Diemel.

Together with the southeast part of the Teutoburg Forest, the Eggegebirge forms the elongated and 2711 km² large Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park, also known earlier as the Eggegebirge Nature Park and the southern Teutoburg Forest .

Bird sanctuary

In the south, towards the federal motorway 44 , the European bird sanctuary Egge is designated. The 70 km long Eggeweg , one of the German long-distance hiking trails , leads mostly over its main ridge in a north-south direction as part of Hermannshöhen and European long-distance hiking trail E1 . Transport links

A little north of the Eggegebirge, beyond the interface with the Teutoburg Forest, Bundesstraße 1 runs in a south-west-northeast direction , roughly in the middle the B 64 runs through the mountains in a west-east direction and past it to the south-west, in the transition area to the Warburg Forest runs the federal road 68 with connection to the nearby federal highways 7 and 252 as well as via the latter to the federal motorway 44 .

The railway lines Hanover – Altenbeken , Kreiensen-Altenbeken and Herford – Himmighausen in the 1632 m long Rehberg tunnel run through the main Egge ridge in a west-east direction . In Altenbeken station they have a connection to the Hamm – Warburg railway line , which crosses under the mountain ridge in the 2880 m long Eggetunnel in a north-west-south-east direction.
