Location of Schwaney in Altenbeken

Schwaney is a district of the Altenbeken municipality in the Paderborn district in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany . About 2,700 people live in the village .

geography

Geographical location

Schwaney is located around twelve kilometers east of Paderborn at the west foot of the Eggegebirge in the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge Nature Park . West of Schwaney ( 290  m above sea  level ), whose municipal area (30.938 km²) between 240 and 395  m above sea level. NN lies the Paderborn plateau .

The scenic surroundings of Schwaney are characterized by numerous rivers running through the valley plains to the west , which were previously also used as waterways for transport. This includes the Ellerbach , which rises just a few kilometers south of the village, flows through it and is locally fed by the small Rotenbach.

climate

Due to the difference in altitude to the surrounding area, the climate is noticeably rougher. Due to the hillside location at the Egge, there is often heavy uphill rain in Schwaney .

history

The current place name is derived from the name Suanecghe . The front part Suan is derived from the Low German word for swan. The swan was the heraldic animal of the Paderborn bishop Balduin von Steinfurt, who briefly granted Schwaney city rights in 1344 . The rear part ecghe can be traced back to the basic word egge ('sharpness' or 'edge'), which corresponds to the high German corner (e.g. also in the name Eggegebirge ).

The construction of an episcopal moated castle also fell during this period, but it was destroyed again in 1380 by a feud among the Paderborn aristocracy. After that, the place was significantly influenced by the knights of the nearby Heerse Abbey , today located in the neighboring village of Neuenheerse .

Documentary mention

The place is mentioned for the first time in 970 under the name Ecwordinghusen in § 121 of the register of goods in the Corveyer traditions:

"Tradidit Tiadulfus pro Asic et uxore sua et filia XXXIX jugera et I junalem in Ecwardeshusen"

"For Asic, whose wife and daughter, Tiadulfus gave 39 acres and a day's work in Ecwardeshusen"

- H. Küting "Schwaney"

Modern times

The townscape was changed significantly twice by major fires, first in the Seven Years War (1762) and then in 1895. The parish church also fell victim to the last fire. Today's parish church of St. Johannes Baptist , built in neo-Gothic style from local Egge sandstones , was inaugurated in October 1898. It houses a valuable cross reliquary, which was extensively restored in 2009.

Schwaney has belonged to the secular rule of the German diocese Paderborn , originally in the duchy of Saxony , since it was founded . From the 14th century, the territory of the prince-bishopric of Paderborn ( Hochstift ) was formed in the Holy Roman Empire , and from the 16th century it became part of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire . In 1802/03 the bishopric was occupied by the Kingdom of Prussia . In Napoleonic times, the place was part of the Kingdom of Westphalia and the canton of Dringenberg . From 1815 Schwaney finally belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia, from 1871 part of the German Empire . 1945–1949 Schwaney was part of the British zone of occupation , from 1946 governed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1949 also by the Federal Republic of Germany .

As part of the municipal reorganization through the Sauerland / Paderborn law , Schwaney was merged with Altenbeken and Buke on January 1, 1975 to form the new municipality of Altenbeken.

Economy and Infrastructure

Although agriculture shapes the image of the place, it hardly plays a role as a branch of business today. Due to its proximity to the district town of Paderborn, its economic influence is significant today. In the recent past, despite the increase in the population, there has been a reduction in local employment opportunities and shops to meet primary needs. Local economic activities are concentrated in the industrial area between the two districts of Buke and Schwaney.

The place has a primary school and the kindergartens “St. Johannes "and" St. Franziskus ”, each in Catholic sponsorship.

Personalities

Culture

Schwaney has a very active club life, in which the clubs take care of youth work and leisure activities, offer a variety of events throughout the year and thus also strengthen cohesion in the village.

In 1836 the brotherhood was re-established in its present form; it is called "St. Sebastian - Schützenbruderschaft 1733 Schwaney eV “in the Paderborn register of associations. The brotherhood built its own hall in 1921, which was rebuilt in 1965 and considerably expanded and expanded in 1992. In 1969 the west and east companies were founded. The center of the village (from the church) was initially chosen as the dividing line for members. However, this dogma no longer applies, so that today everyone enters where his friends and acquaintances march. In 1983 there was a jubilee celebration for the 250th anniversary - in 2008 the 275th anniversary followed. More than 1000 external shooters and musicians were guests in Eggedorf for both events. In 2008 even the highest representatives of the Federation of Historical German Rifle Brotherhoods - Grand Master Hubertus Prince zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Auxiliary Bishop Heiner Koch - were welcomed by Colonel Horst Otten at the time.

The year of foundation for the young shooters and the shooting sports department is 1987. Both groups have established themselves as solid pillars of the brotherhood. At their 25th anniversary in 2012, the newly elected Grand Master Dr. Emanuel Prince of Salm Salm the Brotherhood. At the same time, the district young rifle day with more than 500 participants took place in the rifle hall on this day.
