The federal road 68 (abbreviation: B 68 ) is a German federal road and runs on two sections from Cloppenburg - Stapelfeld in Lower Saxony via Quakenbrück and Bramsche to Osnabrück and on a shorter segment from Paderborn via Lichtenau to Warburg - Scherfede in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The B 68 is the successor to Reichsstraße 68, which was part of the network of German highways before the Second World War .

In Wallenhorst on November 19, 1966 the bridge under construction on the B 68 over Ruller Strasse collapsed. As concreting work was in progress, the witch's stone next to the bridge was largely spilled under the still liquid concrete. It was not exposed again until 1997.

Originally, the B 68 was to be expanded almost entirely to four lanes or replaced by a new line running parallel to it. In 1972 the new line was called "B 68 new". In 1972 it was planned to run the B 68 from the current end of the A 33 near Belm on the northern outskirts of Osnabrück in a westerly direction. Immediately north of today's start of the expressway in the area of the city of Osnabrück, the B 68 should merge with the current route of the B 68 and form a motorway junction Osnabrück-Nord with today's A 1 .

The federal road nomenclature, which is still used today, has essentially been in effect since 1976. Since then there has also been an "A 33". This was intended to replace the B 68 in the sections in which it runs parallel to the new motorway from the start. As early as 1980, the plan was abandoned to run the A 33 closely along the northern outskirts of Osnabrück and to continue it north of the A 1. As a result, care was taken when assigning the numbers of the interchanges that a number was left free on the A 1 for a motorway triangle with the A 33.

Current situation

The completion of the A 33 between Osnabrück- Schinkel and the Wünnenberg-Haaren motorway junction led to the partial downgrading of the B 68. Between Halle and Paderborn , the B 68 was completely stepped down to state road 756.

Since February 2009, the motorway-like B 68 between Bramsche and Osnabrück has been continuously passable. The widening and the freedom from intersections will make it easier to drive from the city center of Osnabrück or from the directions of Münster and Amsterdam to the north of the Osnabrück district and the southern district of Cloppenburg , especially since there are now also bypasses around Essen / Oldenburg , Quakenbrück, Badbergen and Bersenbrück make it more fluid.

Planning

The section in the northern district of Osnabrück and in the district of Cloppenburg as well as the section southeast of Paderborn are to be retained as the B 68 .

In 2014, a number of serious problems occurred on the B 68 in the urban area of Osnabrück , e.g. T. fatal accidents between motorists and cyclists or pedestrians. In addition, the maximum values for fine dust and nitrogen oxides are regularly exceeded along the route in Osnabrück , and there is also a high level of noise pollution . Due to this, the city of Osnabrück submitted an application to the BMVI and NLStBV in November 2014 , in which it called for the downgrading of the B 68 in the city area. As an alternative for through traffic, the city suggests routing traffic between the A 1 junction Osnabrück-Nord and the A 30 junction Osnabrück-Nahne via Autobahns 1 and 30 . It is hoped that this will result in a reduction in the volume of traffic (especially heavy goods traffic ) in the Osnabrück city center .

However, the NLStBV rejected the application in summer 2015 on the grounds that the alternative route via the Lotter Kreuz mentioned by the city of Osnabrück was already overloaded and the situation would be exacerbated by a downgrade of the B 68. A downgrade will only be possible when the gap on the A 33 between Belm and the A 1 is closed. The planned reconstruction of an intersection, which was decided by the Osnabrück city administration in November 2015, should at least prevent fatal accidents there in the future.

As it became known in November 2017, the city of Osnabrück wants to try to get the responsible authorities to split the B 68 in the area of the Osnabrück Wallring. According to the concept, through traffic should only drive the Wallring on the "inside", ie clockwise. The eastern sub-ring between Hansastrasse and Johannisstrasse (via Erich-Maria-Remarque-Ring, Goethering, Konrad-Adenauer-Ring, Petersburger Wall) should therefore be upgraded in a southerly direction to the federal highway. In combination with a ban on heavy goods traffic from leaving the Wallring by turning right, dangerous situations between heavy goods traffic and cyclists or pedestrians are to be prevented.
