The federal road 213 (abbreviation: B 213 ) is a two-part federal road in Lower Saxony and forms part of the historic Flemish Road from Flanders to Bremen and Hamburg and part of the road of megalithic culture . The longer south-western part of the federal road runs from the Dutch-German border near Nordhorn to the Ahlhorn junction of the A 29 , the shorter, northeastern part from the Wildeshausen-West junction of the A 1 to the Delmenhorst -Deichhorst junction of the A 28 . The Haselünne-Cloppenburg section of the B 213 is part of the European route 233 .

history

The Flemish Road , the course of which the B 213 largely follows, was an old road , the age of which is unknown. It experienced a heyday as a land route between the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck , Hamburg , Bremen , Haselünne , Deventer , Arnheim and Nijmegen as well as the cities of Antwerp and Bruges . A connection to Amsterdam branched off in Deventer .

The first postal connection between Hamburg and Amsterdam was established in 1650. The stagecoaches between Bremen and Lingen have operated daily since 1809 . The continuous stagecoach connection between Hamburg and Amsterdam was discontinued in 1852 because the railway connection via Hanover was felt to be faster and more comfortable.

Due to the great importance of this route, the section between Nordhorn and Lingen was expanded in 1824 as the first land connection in the county of Bentheim to the Chaussee . It was not until 1825 that the ferry that crossed the Ems between Lingen and Schepsdorf was replaced by a newly built bridge .

Road construction in the Oldenburg part of the line began in 1837 with the Ahlhorn - Cloppenburg section . Between 1856 and 1869, the road construction was completed on the entire route between Delmenhorst and Löningen . Until 1900 a toll (road money) was levied in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg to finance road construction.

Originally, the B 213 had a large number of through-towns, including through the cities of Nordhorn, Lingen, Cloppenburg and Wildeshausen. Most of these passages have now been replaced by bypasses. The last bottleneck, the through-road through Lastrup , was removed on December 5, 2009 with the inauguration of a bypass road. Until the Delmenhorst bypass was built, the B 213 ended at the confluence with Bundesstraße 75 (forerunner of the A 28 between Oldenburg and Bremen ). Today the Delmenhorst-Deichhorst junction of the A 28 forms the north-eastern end of the B 213.

After a long political discussion, the B 213 between the Ahlhorn junction of the Federal Motorway 29 and the Wildeshausen-West junction of the Federal Motorway 1 was downgraded to a municipal road and the municipal road was closed to truck traffic as it passed through the town of Ahlhorn. Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes who want to drive from Cloppenburg to Bremen are, since on the B 72 to A 1 directed.

Since February 2013 a new junction has been built at the Cloppenburg bypass of the B 213, which allows road users from Molbergen to drive onto the B 213 without detours.

Nordhorn received a north bypass in 2019. The new route of the federal highway 403 runs on the western section ; a new route of the B 213 forms the eastern section. Together, both roads run southwards via the extended eastern bypass of Nordhorn. The corresponding plan approval procedure was initiated on January 22, 2008. The planning approval decision was made on May 31, 2011, construction began in 2015 with the first bridge structures and was completed on July 10, 2019.

Planning

Four-lane expansion of the B 213 between Haselünne and Cloppenburg

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the project is to expand the B 402, B 213 and B 72 on the route west of Meppen (A 31) to west of Cloppenburg ( B 68 ) from two to four lanes with a total length of 61.0 kilometers and 218 , 3 million euros total costs included in further requirements. The forecast for the costs of the four-lane expansion rose by more than 329% to 719 million euros by August 2014.

The districts of Emsland and Cloppenburg have already started planning. The project is divided into 8 planning sections, 6 of which concern the B 213. The third planning section with around 14.5 kilometers is located between Haselünne-West (Gut Sautmannshausen, B 402) and the Emsland / Cloppenburg district border east of Herzlake . A northern bypass is planned for Haselünne parents. To the east of parents, the route will reach the old B 213. Essentially, the existing route is to be widened to the south between Eltern and Herzlake. In the Herzlake area, widening to the north and a new route next to the existing route to the district boundary are planned. A total of three connection points are planned to the northwest and northeast of Haselünne and near Herzlake. In January 2012 the results of the preliminary investigation were presented to the public.

The fourth planning section with a length of around 10.2 kilometers covers the area between the district border Emsland / Cloppenburg and east of Löningen . The federal road is to run north of the existing road and around Löningen in the future, so that a new building will be necessary. In the course of this section, two junctions are to be built, namely at Helmighausen and east of Löningen. The line was determined for this section. The preliminary drafts are in progress.

The 5th planning phase with a length of around 10 km begins east of Löningen and ends east of the Lastrup bypass . A southern carriageway will be added between Löningen and west of Lastrup. The Lastrup bypass will be expanded when the curve radii are adjusted. Two connection points are planned: Lastrup-Nord and Lastrup-Ost. In contrast, the Lastrup-West junction that is already in place today will no longer exist. The preliminary investigation is complete. Their results were presented to the public in January 2012.

The 6th planning phase with a length of around 8.2 km extends east of Lastrup to west of Cloppenburg. The route will use the existing line and will be supplemented in the western part by a northern directional lane and in the eastern part by a southern 2nd lane. A total of two connection points are planned here: at Kneheim and at Cloppenburg-Stapelfeld. The completed preliminary investigation was also presented to the public in January 2012. The planning section 7 includes the four-lane bypass Cloppenburg.

The 8th planning section extends over a length of 12.3 kilometers between Cloppenburg-Bethen and east of the junction with the A1. It has already been developed without any plans. Essentially, the addition of a northerly lane is planned. A second carriageway south of the existing structure is only planned in the eastern section. The rest of the road network is to be connected at 4 points: near Cloppenburg- Höltinghausen , west of Emstek , south of Emstek or north-east of Cappeln (Oldenburg) and east of Emstek. The fifth junction with the A1 is to be developed as a clover leaf. The result of the preliminary investigation was presented to the public in January 2012.

There is resistance to the entire project. The association "Verkehrswende Cloppenburg-Emsland" is committed to the planned project. In particular, the opponents argue that the route has already been expanded to meet demand and that no economic benefit for the region is discernible. In addition, the route cuts through unique landscapes, endangered animal and plant species worthy of protection and agriculture. Additional pollution and noise emissions can also be expected.

Delmenhorst bypass

As part of the preliminary planning for the Delmenhorst bypass, the intention is to extend the B 213 to the north. Delmenhorst is to be bypassed to the west or east in the direction of Wesermarsch and the new Weser tunnel on the 281 federal motorway .

Bypassing Lingen-Damaschke and Lingen north bypass

Two projects by the city of Lingen are also expected to have a traffic impact on federal highway 213. For example, a road connection north around the Damaschke district to the Altenlingen exit of the existing bypass road ( Bundesstrasse 70 ) is to be created in order to relieve the Damaschke through-traffic. While a first section of the urban Ulanenstrasse is completed, a second section is under construction. The traffic handover should take place in autumn 2013. For years a citizens' initiative fought for this bypassing.

In addition, a northern bypass for Lingen is being planned as part of the urban construction work, which should run from the Altenlingen exit (B 70) past the Emsland oil refinery via Wachendorf to the Wietmarschen junction of the A 31 .
