Situation in different countries

Germany

In Germany, the municipalities are road construction authorities for municipal roads . A distinction is made between community roads and local roads . In the order of the street classification, the municipal roads are located below the district roads ; in contrast to these, municipal roads are also not numbered. The total length of the municipal road network is over 430,000 km, so around 63% of the total road network is municipal roads.

Belonging to the municipal level sometimes leads municipalities to strive for municipal roads to be rededicated as district roads. In this case, maintenance would be the responsibility of the county. This can be an advantage for residents, as z. B. the approval of the road fence is incumbent on the district and the residents' contributions can be measured differently.

Austria

In Austria, the municipality is also the street maintainer of municipal roads , and there is no special marking - apart from street names - or numbering. The total length of the municipal road network in Austria is approximately 94,000 km, i.e. around 72% of the total road network.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, communal roads are public connections between resident communes and the mixed communes and their subdivisions. They are for general use and enable internal traffic in a town. They also connect towns, hamlets and quarters. The total length of the municipal road network is around 51,500 km, which corresponds approximately to a share of 72%.
