The federal highway 246a in Saxony-Anhalt leads in a semicircular arc east, south and west around the state capital Magdeburg .

The number 246a was assigned during GDR times. Unlike in the Federal Republic of Germany, where new numbers from 399 appeared, in the GDR numbers with an a-extension were used.

New building and further planning

Schönebeck was given a bypass that was completed in 2013. The first planning section from Landesstraße 65 (roundabout) to the Schönebeck junction of the A 14 was implemented in 2004. The second planning phase was opened to traffic on April 27, 2009. This section connects the state road 51 with the L 65. The third planning section was completed on August 27, 2013 with the inauguration of the Schönebecker Elbauenbrücke . The 1128 meter long bridge crosses the Elbe with a 185 meter cable stayed bridge .

A bypass of Plötzky and Gommern has been registered by the state of Saxony-Anhalt under the designation B246a-G10-ST. This variant was not included in the traffic route plan 2030 and marked with the note "no urgency, discarded variant".
