It begins in Großer Kain , across from the former Zum Großer Kain inn , and leads via Repke , Hankensbüttel , Wittingen , Brome , Rorien (Gifhorn district), Velpke , Helmstedt , Schöningen (Helmstedt district), Dardesheim , Wernigerode to Elbingerode (Oberharz am Brocken, Harz district).
Bundesstraße 244 was divided between Jerxheim and Dedeleben during the Cold War in the 20th century.
