The federal highway 73 (abbreviation: B 73 ) is a German federal highway and leads from Cuxhaven to Hamburg .

history

origin

The road between Buxtehude and Stade was completed in 1832. From 1837 this road led through the Buxtehude city center, after the "Lange Straße" in Buxtehude was widened accordingly. The road between Stade and Cuxhaven was completed in 1856.

Previous routes and names

From 1932 the route was designated as Fernverkehrsstraße 73 (FVS 73) and from 1934 as Reichsstraße 73 (R 73) .

Replacements

As the first bypass road, the Stader bypass road was built between 1955 and 1957. It relieved the city center of Stade from through traffic. In 1962 the bypass road in Buxtehude was built. Further detours were made in Cuxhaven-Groden (together with the motorway roundabout at the beginning of the A 27 ), in Cuxhaven- Altenbruch , in Neuhaus (Oste) and in Hemmoor (only part of the town) and near Horneburg . From 2007 to 2009 a bypass road was built south of Otterndorf . From this, a new route is to be built in the long term along the Niederelbebahn up to Cadenberge and then north around this place. The Altenwalde motorway feeder road is to be extended in the long term to the existing road between Altenbruch and Otterndorf (various variants are being planned).

The parallel federal motorway 26 between Stade and Horneburg was completed in 2008, and further sections to Hamburg are to follow. This motorway will replace the B 73 as a trunk road; A decision on a gradation of previous federal highways after the construction of a parallel motorway is usually made a few years after completion of the motorway.

The federal road 73 begins at the Altenwalde motorway junction of the A 27 , leads along the route of the former B 6 north to Cuxhaven , then east via Otterndorf , past Neuhaus (Oste) via Cadenberge , Hemmoor (here junction with the B 495 ), Hechthausen , Himmelpforten , Stade (here junction of the B 74 ), Horneburg , Buxtehude (in the district of Ovelgönne junction of the B 3 ) and Neu Wulmstorf , until it meets the federal highways 4 and 75 , which run together here in Hamburg - Harburg .

Traffic safety

Since the B 73 is known as the "death route" or "death road", it is to be replaced by the A 26 between Stade and Hamburg . On October 23, 2008, the first section of the A 26 between Horneburg and Stade was released; the second section from Horneburg to Jork was opened for car traffic in 2014.

The approximately 100 kilometers long main axis between the two cities of Cuxhaven and Hamburg is heavily congested. This is also one of the reasons that makes the B73 such a dangerous route. In 2003, 31,189 vehicles used the B 73 in Harburg every day .

Between 1995 and 2000 there were an average of 71 serious traffic accidents on the B 73, with 82 seriously injured and twelve fatalities. This means that federal highway 73 is around 62 percent above the national average.

For the area between Hechthausen and Cuxhaven, the problem was vividly illustrated with a different calculation: Based on the traffic accidents from 1995 to 2000, a traffic accident happened every twelve meters, a person was seriously injured every 120 meters and a person every 1,200 meters killed. The main causes of accidents are alcohol and speeding.

In 2001 the road safety project B 73 was founded. As part of this campaign, a white wooden cross was placed on the B 73 for each dead person. In addition, crashed vehicles were 'exhibited' on the street, but they did not necessarily originate from real accidents or definitely from the B73. The number of serious accidents fell from an average of 71 to 47 in 2001, to 57 in the following year and to 39 in 2003. The number of seriously injured fell from an average of 82 to 55 in 2001, 60 in the following year and 41 in 2003. The number of deaths fell from an average of twelve to six in 2001 and four victims in each of the following two years.

tourism

A Pentecost market takes place regularly at Whitsun in the Neukloster district of Buxtehude. On this occasion, the B 73 between Buxtehude-Süd and Hedendorf is closed for three days, the length of the diversion is more than ten kilometers.

The old town festival takes place in Otterndorf on the first weekend in August. Then the B 73 will be closed from Friday to Sunday lunchtime and the traffic will be guided over the relief road.
