The federal motorway 27 (abbreviation: BAB 27 ) - short form: Autobahn 27 (abbreviation: A 27 ) - runs over a total length of 162 kilometers from Cuxhaven as an eastern tangent past Bremerhaven and Bremen to the Bremer Kreuz with the A 1 . From here the A 27 leads past Achim and Verden (Aller) to the Walsrode motorway triangle , where it turns into the A 7 .
The entire route is routed as European route 234 (abbreviation: E 234) in the network of European roads.
Due to the connection to the ports of Bremen, Bremerhaven and Cuxhavens , a lot of heavy goods traffic is handled on the route.

The 162 km long motorway starts in Cuxhaven and runs along Bremerhaven and Bremen to Walsrode, where it is connected to the Walsrode triangle. Along the entire length of the route, there are intersections or encounters with the following motorways:

history
The section in the area of the Bremen Blockland is one of the oldest German autobahns and was initially built as a continuation of the current A1 coming from Hamburg towards Ihlpohl in the north of Bremen. Construction began in 1933, and the Blockland Autobahn opened in 1937.
The motorway had a total width of 15 meters including the median, which at that time was only 40 centimeters wide.
In 1959, the construction of the Bremer Kreuz began, which was a prerequisite for further construction in the direction of Hanover. When it opened in 1962, it was the largest and most modern motorway junction in Germany. The motorway was extended to Achim on November 15, 1962, and to Verden on July 15, 1963 . Since July 29, 1964, it has led to the Walsrode motorway triangle , where the A 27 is linked to the A 7 leading to Hanover.
The connection points in Bremen were renamed around 1962: Bremen-Mitte became Bremen-Vahr and Bremen-Ost became Bremen-Sebaldsbrück. The Bremen-Freihafen exit (now Überseestadt) was added around 1963, and the Horn-Lehe exit in 1975.
As early as 1963, the decision was made to completely rebuild the narrow and now ailing blockland motorway from 1937 in double the width. Work began in 1968 at Bremer Kreuz and was completed in 1972 up to the then new Bremen-Freihäfen junction and in 1974 up to Ihlpohl.
Further construction in the direction of Cuxhaven via Bremerhaven was suspended for several years and was only resumed towards the end of the 1960s with a motorway bypass around Bremerhaven, which was opened in 1974. With the completion of the last missing sections between the Bremen-Nord and Bremerhaven-Süd distribution districts in November 1977 and Debstedt and Cuxhaven in December 1981, the motorway between Cuxhaven and Bremen replaced the completely overloaded federal highway 6 as a federal trunk road . The route is also called the "haddock line" because of the connection to the (former) fishing site in Cuxhaven.
In 1995 the Bremen-Industriehäfen motorway triangle was put into operation to connect the A 281 . The first section leads two kilometers in the direction of the Weser and ends there, the extension through a Weser tunnel to the GVZ Bremen , where there is a connection to other already completed sections of the A 281, is planned.
In November 2005, the six-lane expansion of the otherwise four-lane carriageway between Bremen- Überseestadt and Bremen- Burglesum , the so-called “Blocklandautobahn”, was completed in order to resolve the daily congestion of commuters from and to Bremen. There was a dispute between Bremen and Osterholz-Scharmbeck , as the reference to the district town had initially disappeared from the new signs at the Ritterhude-Süd exit.
particularities
A curiosity is the Sebaldsbrück exit, which - contrary to the name suggests - is not in Sebaldsbrück , but five kilometers away in the municipality of Oyten (Verden district), which borders directly on Bremen- Osterholz . This avoids the risk of confusion with Osterholz-Scharmbeck, which is not far away to the north .
The Bremer Kreuz is also not located within the Bremen city limits, but belongs to the Verden district. The signs pointing to the state of Lower Saxony / Hanseatic City of Bremen on the A 27 not far from the junction do not correspond to the actual geographical borderline.
The striking drop tower of the University of Bremen can be seen near the Bremen-Horn / Lehe junction .
In the Bremen district of Burg-Grambke, there are remains of a driveway from the early years of the motorway on the road side towards the south. In the meantime, the remnants of the former driveway can hardly be found anymore due to renovation work. Discussions in the 1970s to reactivate this driveway when it was not yet destroyed were quickly discarded.
Parts of the route in the Bremerhaven area are designed as pile foundations with bored piles of 30 meters in length in order to penetrate the more than 15 meters thick peat layers , such as the area of the Bremerhaven-Süd / Nesse exit with access and exit points and a section between the Bremerhaven exits -Mitte and Bremerhaven overseas ports.
The section between the Debstedt exit and the end of the autobahn near Cuxhaven is designed with a narrower lane width and narrower verges to reduce construction costs and corresponds to the considerably lower traffic volume there when it is expanded.
The access ramps to the former temporary airfields in the areas north of the Neuenwalde exit and south of the Nordholz exit - see the course of the road on the right - have since been abandoned.
The only tank and rest stop along the A 27 has been called "Langwedel / Daverden" since it was built (corresponding to the closest places). With the opening of the Langwedel junction in April 2011 (previously only a temporary exit or driveway at the service area), the service area was renamed “Goldbach” (north / south). The name-giving small stream flows nearby.
In October 2011, a state treaty was concluded between the federal states of Lower Saxony and Bremen on the responsibilities in the area of the A 27. Subsequently, the state of Lower Saxony assigns the responsibility of the road construction authorities to the state of Bremen for the A 27 section between the Ihlpohl and Uthlede junctions, which is directly connected to the Bremen area; in return, the section of the A 27, which is in the Bremerhaven area (and thus in the State of Bremen), transferred from Bremen to the road construction authorities of the State of Lower Saxony. The road traffic authorities of the state of Bremen are in turn responsible on the section of the A 27 between the Bremerhaven-Wulsdorf and Debstedt junctions on the section belonging to Lower Saxony.
Planned expansion measures
The A 27 is to be expanded to six lanes between the Bremen-Überseestadt AS and the Bremen junction. In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 , the urgent need project is managed with the elimination of bottlenecks (VB-E).
Former plans
A planned extension of the A 27 from Walsrode in the direction of Berlin was rejected as part of the reorganization of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030.
