The Bundesautobahn 562 (abbreviation: BAB 562 ) - short form: Autobahn 562 (abbreviation: A 562 ) - is a four kilometer long motorway in the south of Bonn . It connects the traffic routes on the left and right of the Rhine via a bridge over the Rhine.

Trunk roads in the Bonn area

The 562 motorway is entirely within the city of Bonn. It begins in the west on the railway line on the left bank of the Rhine and passes under the federal highway 9 , with which it is connected at a junction similar to a motorway junction . Over the southern of the three Bonn Rhine bridge ( Konrad Adenauer Bridge ) it crosses the Rhine and provides via the motorway junction Bonn-Ost connection to the federal highway 59 ago. Immediately after the motorway junction, it ends in a temporary junction that enables the transition to a city street.

In the area of the Rhine bridge, which makes up about half of the total length of the A 562, there are footpaths and cycle paths on both sides of the motorway. The median is formed by a tram route that has a stop on the left bank of the Rhine ( Rheinaue ) in the middle of the motorway.

In particular, the motorway connects the government district that was newly formed at the time the motorway was built, today's federal quarter , and the Rheinaue leisure park , which was inaugurated in 1979, with the parts of the city of Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district on the right bank of the Rhine .

In addition to the A 36 and the A 40 , the A 562 is the only motorway in which a city or tram runs in sections in the middle, i.e. between the two lanes .

Planning and construction

The A 562 was originally part of the planning for the A 56 , which should lead from Selfkant on the Dutch border via Jülich , Düren and Euskirchen and Bonn to Waldbröl and thus create a southern bypass of the Kölner Ring . This project was abandoned in 1986.

On the left bank of the Rhine, the A 562 marks the border between the formerly independent cities of Bonn and Bad Godesberg , as neither city wanted the autobahn in their area. When the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke was opened to traffic in 1972, Bad Godesberg was already incorporated, so that the motorway now runs right through the unified urban area.

Expansion plans for the "Südtangente"

Original planning: Südtangente (gray), A 56 (dashed)

As a remainder of the A 56 plan, extensions of the A 562 to the so-called " Südtangente " were planned for a long time . An expansion to the west should lead through tunnels under the railway line and under the Venusberg to the A 565 . An extension to the east, " Ennertaufstieg called" should be considered as three-lane 56n federal highway an additional connection to the A3 produce.

These projects were fiercely controversial, as many residents feared impairment of the landscape, environmental damage and additional induced traffic. As an alternative to the Ennert ascent, an improvement of the previously thin public transport offer was proposed. The proponents argued, however, that the measure would have a positive impact on nature, since the ever increasing pollution, especially of the Siebengebirge , would decrease sharply and the partly underground route (1,100 meter long Ennert tunnel) would not significantly change the landscape. In addition, the entire Bonn-Rhein-Sieg economic region benefits from this, which is confirmed by an expert report that predicts a very high cost-benefit factor . Several other reports, including an environmental impact study (UVS), have spoken out against the Ennert ascent.

The eastern extension was deleted from the federal transport infrastructure plan in 2003 on the initiative of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The reason given was that the route, which is estimated to cost around 60 million euros, would only be used by 4,000 cars a day and that traffic in the Rhein-Sieg district generally runs much more in north-south than east-west direction. Local politicians in the Rhein-Sieg district later campaigned for a resumption of the plan.

After it was removed from the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, six alternative expansion options were examined. The most realistic of these was considered to be a combination of two measures, including a new road from Oberkassel to the Siebengebirge junction and a tunnel through the Great Mount of Olives to relieve state road 331 .

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 from 2016, the southern bypass is again listed with the urgency “Further need”, it bears the project name B 56-G40 NW and is to be 11.5 km long at a cost of 683.4 million euros.

For decades, areas between the city districts of Bonn and Bad Godesberg were kept free for an extension of the A 562 on the left bank of the Rhine. On June 14, 2006, the Bonn city council decided to develop these areas, so that the two former cities can now finally grow together.
