Bundesautobahn 86 (abbreviation: BAB 86 ) - short form: Autobahn 86 (abbreviation: A 86 ) - was the project name of a planned motorway from Breisach via Freiburg im Breisgau - Titisee - Donaueschingen - Tuttlingen - Riedlingen - Ehingen (Danube) - Ulm to Langenau . The section Freiburg im Breisgau - Donaueschingen was referred to as the Hochschwarzwaldautobahn (for the Black Forest autobahn, see also Bundesautobahn 84 ). Only a small section of the planned route was realized, namely the A 864 between Donaueschingen and the Bad Dürrheim triangle , which today serves as a feeder to the A 81 .

Planning history

During the Weimar Republic , the Freiburg im Breisgau - Donaueschingen route was planned to be the second stage of the so-called "peak network"; a continuation to Ulm was not included. In the network plans of the National Socialists, the planning of a Reichsautobahn was not found either for the Freiburg - Donaueschingen route or for the eastern section to Ulm.

The expansion plan for the federal highways of the law of July 27, 1957 did not yet provide for the construction of a federal motorway between Breisach, Freiburg, Donaueschingen and Ulm. But the B 31 Breisach - Freiburg - Donaueschingen was also included in the blue network of federal highways to be expanded, as was the B 19 between Ulm and Aalen .

The requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 of June 30, 1971 now contained the new construction of a motorway internally designated as "A 84" from Breisach (federal border D / F) via Gundelfingen , Donaueschingen to Tuttlingen. Here the A 84 should merge into the four-lane B 311n Tuningen - Tuttlingen - Messkirch - Riedlingen - Ehingen - Ulm. Finally, the four-lane construction of the B 19 from Ulm to Langenau was envisaged. Accordingly, the following sub-projects were planned:

Short name section expansion was standing comment
A 84 Federal border D / F near Breisach - south of Bötzingen (triangle with the B 31n ) - north of Freiburg (cross with the A 5 ) - Gundelfingen (cross with the B 294 ) - north of Kirchzarten (triangle with the B 31n) four-lane Stage II
A 84 north of Kirchzarten (triangle with the B 31n) - Donaueschingen (cross with B 27 ) - junction Bad Dürrheim (today triangle Bad Dürrheim with the A 81 ) four-lane Level I.
A 84 Kreuz Bad Dürrheim (today triangle Bad Dürrheim with the A 81) - Tuttlingen (triangle with the B 311 / B 311n) four-lane Stage III
B 311 / B 311n Tuttlingen (triangle with the B 311 / A 84) - Ulm four-lane Stage III with crosses for the B 32 / B 32n for Quantities and the B 312 / B 312n for Quantities
B 19 Ulm - Langenau four-lane level I. with the A 8 junction north of Ulm and the triangle to the A 7 near Langenau

With the restructuring of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the route was summarized under the uniform designation as "Federal Motorway 86".

The A 86 was still included unchanged in the federal government's network map of January 1, 1976.

But already the requirement plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 of August 5, 1976 showed the first changes. Accordingly, a northern bypass of Freiburg was still planned. However, to the west of Kirchzarten this should flow into the B 31 to be expanded and no longer lead directly north to Donaueschingen. To the east of Kirchzarten, the A 86 should then branch off from the B 31 again and run along the route to Donaueschingen that was previously planned. In addition, the urgency of individual sections was graded. The following picture emerged:

section expansion was standing
Breisach - Freiburg-Nord junction (A 5) possible further need
Freiburg-Nord junction (A 5) - Gundelfingen 1st carriageway as B 294 already completed, 2nd carriageway as a possible further requirement
Gundelfingen - west of Kirchzarten (B 31) 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane possible further demand
OU Kirchzarten (B 31) four-lane Stage Ia
east of Kirchzarten - north of Titisee-Neustadt possible further need
north of Titisee-Neustadt - Donaueschingen Stage Ib
Donaueschingen - Bad Dürrheim junction (A 81) ongoing project
Junction Bad Dürrheim (A 81) - Talheim : possible further need
Talheim - Tuttlingen 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement
Tuttlingen - Ulm possible further need
Ulm - Langenau 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement

The construction of the northern bypass of Freiburg was abandoned in 1979 in favor of the B 31 East including a Freiburg city tunnel .

With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the end of the A 86 came. The plans were limited to the construction of new sections and sections of the B 31 and the B 311 :

Short name section expansion was standing
B 31a Breisach - AS Freiburg-Mitte two-lane Level I.
B 31 four lanes Level I.

The third law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways of April 21, 1986 did not lead to the A 86 being re-included in the requirement plan. The expansion and construction of federal highways 31 and 311 was also planned:

Short name section expansion was standing

The A 86 was still not included in the requirement plan of the Fourth Act to Change the Act on the Expansion of the Trunk Road from November 15, 1993. The expansion and construction of federal highways 31 and 311 had the following projects as their subject:

The requirements plan of the Fifth Act on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 did not result in any new entries with regard to the A 86. Furthermore, the extension and construction of the federal highways 31 and 311 was carried out:
