Bundesautobahn 51 (abbreviation: BAB 51 ) - short form: Autobahn 51 (abbreviation: A 51 ) - was the project name of a motorway planned in the 1970s. It was to lead from Duisburg - Rheinhausen via Krefeld , Viersen , Hückelhoven to Aachen .

Construction work

The junction Krefeld -Gartenstadt ( Bundesautobahn 57 / B 509 ) is already constructed provisions as for the Federal Highway 51 as the interchange has been set up. The B 509 is also four-lane, cross-free and with hard shoulder in the area of the motorway junction.

Planning history

The requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 of June 30, 1971 did not yet contain any planning for a federal motorway, but the two-lane and sometimes four-lane-like new construction of the B 57n and B 57z were planned. This project was divided into the following sections:

B 57z (status as federal highway not yet fully clarified) Rhine bridge near Duisburg-Rheinhausen - AS Duisburg- Kaldenhausen four-lane I.
B 57n AS Duisburg-Kaldenhausen - cross with the federal highway 57 Krefeld-Gartenstadt four-lane I.

Even before the restructuring and new numbering of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, these federal road plans were combined in 1973 to form a uniform project under the internal name “Autobahn 202”.

With the restructuring of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the entire route was given the designation "Federal Motorway 51".

In the second half of the 1970s, plans for the specific route of the motorway were already in place. The route should therefore be as follows:

The requirements plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976 contained numerous changes. Noteworthy is the deletion of the section between the Viersen-Süchteln (A 61) junction , west of Mönchengladbach- Hardt (junction with the A 52), Wegberg and the junction with the A 46 east of Hückelhoven as part of the A 51 Construction of a two-lane B 57n planned as a possible further requirement. In addition, the continuation of the A 51 between Duisburg-Kaldenhausen and Duisburg-Rheinhausen was canceled without replacement. Finally, the priority for the construction of numerous sections of the A 51 also changed. Now the following urgency levels were assigned:

section comment Urgency level
Kreuz Krefeld-Gartenstadt (A 57) - Krefeld- Verberg (L 475) second lane in urgency level Ia
Krefeld-Verberg - Tönisvorst (cross with the A 55) four-lane Ib
Tönisvorst (cross with A 55) - cross Viersen-Süchteln (A 61) four-lane possible further need
Hückelhoven (cross with the A 46) - west of Linnich (cross with the A 56) - northeast of Baesweiler (cross with the A 56) four-lane possible further need
Cross northeast Baesweiler (A 56) - southeast Baesweiler (B 221) four-lane Ib
southeast of Baesweiler - Aachen- Haaren (cross with the federal highway 4 ) four-lane Yes

With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the Linnich (triangle with the A 56) - Aachen (triangle with the A 4) remained in the requirement plan as the A 51 and received overall classification in urgency level I. All other sections of the A 51 were canceled, including the Tönisvorst - Viersen-Süchteln - Wegberg - Hückelhoven - Linnich route without replacement. Only the section Krefeld-Verberg - Tönisvorst (former cross with the A 55) was still included as part of the four-lane north-west bypass Krefeld ( B 509 / B 9n) in urgency level I.

The third law amending the Federal Highway Code of April 21, 1986 put the end of the federal motorway 51. Only the following projects were carried out:

designation section comment Urgency level
B 9n North-west bypass Krefeld (B 9 - Tönisvorst - Krefeld-Forstwald) two-lane further need
B 57 OU Baal two-lane further need
B 57 Linnich - Herzogenratz two-lane further need
B 57 Herzogenrath - Würselen - Aachen (A 4) four-lane further need

The A 51 was not included in the requirement plan after the fourth law amending the law on the expansion of trunk roads of November 15, 1993. The following were planned:

designation section comment Urgency level
B 9 North-west bypass Krefeld (B 9 - Tönisvorst - Krefeld-Forstwald) two-lane urgent need
B 57 OU Baal two-lane further need
B 57 Linnich - Herzogenrath - Würselen - Aachen (A 4) two-lane further need

The 2003 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan did not result in any new addition to the A 51. The requirements plan of the Fifth Act to Modify the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 also included the following projects:

B 9 North-west bypass Krefeld B 9 - Tönisvorst - Krefeld-Forstwald two-lane further need
B 57 OU Baal two-lane further need
B 57 OU LinniI two-lane urgent need
B 57 Gereonsweiler (OU) - Baesweiler (OU) - Alsdorf (OU) with connection to the old B 57 two-lane urgent need

In the list of priorities of October 25, 2011 of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the implementation of the urgent needs of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the OU Gereonsweiler and Alsdorf were moved to the “subordinate planning” category.
