Parish church in Puffendorf

Puffendorf is a church village and northeastern part of Baesweiler in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen . It is at the intersection of federal highways 56 and 57 .

history

1153 Puffendorf and Loverich are mentioned for the first time as "Pophendorp" or "Loverken"; both places belonged together back then. In the Middle Ages , Puffendorf was a crossroads on two long-distance trade routes, which roughly corresponded to the federal highways that cross today. Because of this strategic importance, there was also a castle in Puffendorf , which was completely demolished in the 19th century.

Jan von Werth , an equestrian general from the Thirty Years' War , was probably born on April 6, 1591 in Puffendorf; however, the place of birth is disputed between several localities in the Rhineland.

Today's St. Laurentius Church was rebuilt like many other church buildings in the region in the 19th century; the tower is from the previous building.

Until the local reorganization of the Aachen region, the municipality of Puffendorf, to which Loverich and Floverich also belonged, was part of the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg. The municipal administrative headquarters (municipal administration) was in Immendorf, neighboring to the west. From 1961 to 1971 the zip code was "5111 Puffendorf / over Alsdorf (Kr. Aachen)". Since January 1st, 1972 Puffendorf belongs to Baesweiler.

Infrastructure

The predominantly Catholic population belongs to the parish of St. Laurentius with a parish church in the village. The Schoenstatt Center for the Diocese of Aachen is located in Puffendorf . A club house is available for the clubs and the population to use. The fire station of the local volunteer fire brigade is located in the village . Kindergarten and elementary school are mostly attended in neighboring Loverich. The secondary schools are located in the two largest districts of Baesweiler and Setterich. The only shops in Puffendorf are a farmer's shop and a poultry farmer's farm sale; the last restaurant has been closed for a few years.

traffic

The next motorway junctions are Aldenhoven on the A 44 , Erkelenz-Süd on the A 46 and Weisweiler (from the end of 2006 Eschweiler -Ost ) on the A 4 .

The nearest DB - Stations are "Übach-Palenberg" (9 km) and "Geilenkirchen" (7 km) at the track Aachen-Mönchengladbach and " Eschweiler main station " (17 km) along the route Aachen-Cologne . The closest (9 km) Euregiobahn stop is " Alsdorf-Annapark ".

In the first half of the 20th century, the Geilenkirchen circular railway ran through what is now the city on the Alsdorf – Baesweiler – Setterich – Puffendorf – Immendorf – Geilenkirchen route. The line was closed in 1953. The vernacular still tells, intentionally ambiguous , that one drove “from Puffendorf to Geilenkirchen by railcar”. The stretch of the former Jülich Kreisbahn , which started out from Jülich and has merged into the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB), still leads to Puffendorf . This line still exists until shortly before the former train station, but no trains have run there for several years. The remains of the track systems on the station site itself were removed in spring 2010 as part of the development of a new building area.

Until the closure of the Geilenkirchener Kreisbahn, Puffendorf had two train stations next to each other. Due to the different track widths of the two railways, it was not possible to use a station together.

Several bus lines of the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV) connect Puffendorf with the neighboring towns as well as with Baesweiler, Geilenkirchen , Jülich and Linnich .
