Weisweiler is a place in the Rhenish lignite area and an eastern district of Eschweiler in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia . The landmark is the Weisweiler power station .

history

At the grave of Severin of Cologne , elected third bishop of Cologne at a council in 346 , the church of Saint Severin is mentioned around 800. A growing veneration of this saint beyond Cologne began only in the 10th century, and so in 1282 the Gereonstift in Cologne is named as a collator of the Weisweiler Church of St. Severin. The church is built according to the principle of the Franconian church building in a typical west-east elevation on a terrace above the valley of the Inde , which runs between Weisweiler and Hüüllen . The first part of the place name probably goes back to Wiese . The place name is written on a French map from 1802 "Weisweiler" and on a Prussian map from 1846 "Weissweiler".

Weisweiler has been closely associated with Eschweiler since the 18th century at the latest. From 1794 to 1814, Weisweiler and Hüüllen, with a total of around 850 inhabitants, belonged to the canton of Eschweiler , from 1815 to the mayor's office of Langerwehe in what was then the district of Düren , while Eschweiler came to the then district of Aachen . In 1808 Weisweiler belonged to the Eschweiler District Court, then in 1927 to the Eschweiler Employment Office. In 1961 Weisweiler belongs to Eschweiler by post with 5182 Weisweiler (via Eschweiler) , it also has the same telephone code 02403.

On July 26, 1964, the VVN Kreisverband Düren, in Weisweiler, in Burgweg , inaugurated the memorial stone for the victims of National Socialism .

On January 1, 1972, Weisweiler came to the city of Eschweiler due to the Aachen law, together with Huecheln and Wilhelmshöhe , and moved from the Düren district to the Aachen district .
