Hotel to the old barrier

Klee Oepe [pronounced: klee ööpe] is the eastern part of Eschweiler's old town north of the Inde and lies along the lower “Dürener Strasse” between “Wollenweberstrasse” and the confluence with “Drieschstrasse”. In the east, Klee Oepe borders on Eschweiler-Ost .

In earlier centuries, at today's hotel "Zur alten Barriere", there was a barrier to the toll road at the eastern exit of the city.

History of the name

In past centuries farmers from Eupen often sold their horses in Cologne . They later agreed to meet halfway through. The people of Eupen and Cologne met on the open space east of the then Eschweiler city wall to trade horses , as trade within the city was forbidden. This place quickly became “Klein Eupen” for the people of Cologne, in dialect “Klee Oepe”.
