Hehlrath is a north-western district of Eschweiler in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia and forms a twin district with Kinzweiler .

history

The lay judge "Gerardus de Helrode" is mentioned in two independent sources: in a document of the Aachen court dated November 22, 1219 and in the book of the dead of the Aachen Marienstift , where (around 1234) a foundation is noted on the occasion of his death Schöffe . His predecessors, mentioned in Brabant in 1214, were "Deyso and Joannis de Helrode, his descendants (also active as lay judges in Aachen) were Conradus de Helrode (1234), Rutcherius de Helrode (1252), daughter Margaretha de Helrode (married to Gerard de Punt ( Pont; Aachen: see Ponttor)), Rikald de Helrode called von Koettingen and his son Jordan, who led a feud against the city of Aachen. The Helrod family had a coat of arms with three stone hammers - analogous to the three old stone pits on the Hohen Berg in the direction of Merzbrück and Haaren, where it can be proven that they had possessions. This is the first documented mention of Hehlrath. Until 1506, when the altar of the first chapel was consecrated by the Auxiliary Bishop Theoderich from Cologne , the Hehlrathers had to go to worship after wages . 1787 the dilapidated church was torn down and replaced by a new church, the main nave of which is still standing today.Hehlrath was raised to an independent parish the following year - with the Patron saints St. Cecilia and St. Thecla . In 1831 the construction of a school house began, which was not completed. In 1932 the church was extended by the porch and on February 2, 1985 the parish hall was inaugurated.

Hehlrath belonged to Eschweiler from the 18th century to 1859, from 1859 to 1972 together with Kinzweiler and St. Jöris formed the municipality of Kinzweiler in the district of Aachen, which was spun off from Eschweiler, and came back to Eschweiler on January 1, 1972 together with Kinzweiler and St. Jöris. Postal code from 1961 to 1972 was 5181 Hehlrath (via Eschweiler) . In 1950 the old district of Velau fell victim to the lignite excavator. The place celebrated its 800th anniversary with all the clubs in 2019 with a great response.

Oddities

In earlier centuries the residents of Hehlrath were decried as sorcerers for unknown reasons. Above all, members of individual farming families are said to have had the ability to transform themselves into werewolves . The background of this legend, which is especially popular in the neighboring town of Kinzweiler, is probably the custom of young men, widespread in many parts of the Rhineland , to keep any undesirable competition away from other villages for the girls by jumping on the back of their rivals at night behaved like a raging wolf and thoroughly beaten the boy from the neighboring village or pushed him into a stream. Since the fear of werewolves was widespread in the area on the Inde , the victim believed that he had been the victim of an attack by such a magical being and was careful not to go back to his treasure in Hehlrath.
