Pilgrimage Church of St. Blaise

St. Blaise

The Catholic parish and parish church in Kinzweiler is called St. Blasius and is located on Kirchstrasse . The town of Kinzweiler is mentioned in a document around the year 1200, and the baptismal font, which is still in use, dates from around the same time. Kinzweiler is mentioned by Albert von Aachen , a clergyman from Aachen who wrote the history of the first crusade . Knight Ezelo from Kinzweiler was present himself when Jerusalem was conquered in 1099. Ezelo from Kinzweiler mentioned in the thirty-fourth chapter of the first volume (of two). Kinzweiler has existed as a parish for at least as long. The relationship to the name of the Armenian martyr bishop Blasius can no longer be determined. According to the inscription, the church tower of the parish church has stood since 1498.

Kinzweiler became a place of pilgrimage in 1767 with the miraculous image of the "Mother of God of Good Advice" from Genazzano / Latium, which hangs in the south aisle of the church. The Kreuzkapelle on the Calvary west of the church also became a popular place of pilgrimage . The 14 stations of the cross were set up in 1915/1916. Repairs after the war damage were completed by April 1949. In 1969/1970 the church was enlarged and significantly redesigned under Pastor Josch. As a result of the resettlement of neighboring villages as a result of lignite mining , Kinzweiler and the parish of St. Blasius expanded considerably from the 1960s onwards, but not organically. The spiritual highlight is the annual octave of pilgrimage in the third week of Easter .

The church is the only parish church in the Aachen diocese that is dedicated to this saint.

Between Kinzweiler and Niedermerz, the villages of Langweiler , Laurenzberg , Lürken and Obermerz were demolished in the 1950s and 1960s because of the brown coal mine. The majority of Langweiler and Obermerzer opted for the resettlement area north of "Kalvarienbergstraße" in Kinzweiler. The Kinzweiler vernacular called this new district Neu-Langweiler (see map).
