Eschweiler-Ost is the eastern district of Alt- Eschweiler , today between the city center (more precisely: Klee Oepe ) and Eschweiler- Weisweiler .

history

In the years 1927 to 1930, due to the rapidly growing population, a miners' settlement called "Colony Wetterschacht " was built on open land between Eschweiler (then Aachen district ) and Weisweiler (then Düren district ). The sponsors were the Eschweiler Bergwerksverein EBV and the Aachener Bergmannssiedlungsgesellschaft mbH (ABS). Primarily the miners were employed in the mine reserve . Even before the 1920s, the "Südstraße" with the row of houses No. 1 to 19 and opposite the street "An Wardenslinde" with the No. 2 to 12, also in the east on the "Dürener Straße" were the houses No. 175 bis 207 was built. These settlement areas form the old core of the Eschweiler-Ost district and are under monument protection .

The street name "Saarstrasse" in Eschweiler-Ost is a reminder of the local miners, who mostly came from the Saarland . In popular parlance , the settlement is called Waggeserei , based on the "Waggese", as Saarlanders and Alsatians ( Wasgau ) are called in Eschweiler dialect .

Since the "Rheinstrasse" became known as a social hotspot in the 1960s and 1970s, it and its side streets were renamed "Moselstrasse", "Maasstrasse" and "Weserstrasse" in 1979.

traffic

Eschweiler-Ost lies along the B 264 . The next motorway junction is Eschweiler-Ost on the A 4 . This new junction was opened on December 18, 2006, but only on the southern part from Aachen and Cologne; It has been passable in all directions since June 29, 2007.

Eschweiler-Ost has the four public transport stops "Südstraße", "Herz-Jesu-Kirche", "Wetterschacht" and "Lynenwerk" on lines 28, 48, 52, 94 and 96 between "Eschweiler Bushof" and Weisweiler or Langerwehe or indene .

The next train station is "Eschweiler-Nothberg" on the Euregiobahn . The next DB station is “ Eschweiler Hbf ”.

Heart of jesus

" Herz Jesu " was the name of the Catholic parish and parish church in Eschweiler-Ost on the "Dürener Straße", built from 1938 to 1939 despite the difficult times. As a result of the large parish of St. Peter and Paul and the strong miners' settlements on the eastern edge of the city of Eschweiler, this had become necessary. Because of the erection of the west wall , the construction work was interrupted for several months.

The church was desecrated on June 20, 2015 after the parish had been merged with the parish of Peter and Paul a few years earlier. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche has been a listed building since March 5, 2020.
