The Sacred Heart Church was up to its desecration a Catholic branch church in Eschweiler-Ost , a district of Eschweiler in the Aachen region .

The community belonged to the Catholic parish of St. Peter and Paul in the deanery of Eschweiler. The building was erected during the Nazi era .

history

Due to the populous miners' settlements on the eastern edge of Eschweiler in the area of the weather shaft, the parish of St. Peter and Paul grew steadily in the 1920s. The community consisted of locals, mixed with Saarlanders , Poles and Silesians , who had found their livelihood and a new home here because of the coal mines .

So in 1938 the construction of the Sacred Heart Church began in the east part of the city. Because of the construction of the west wall around 20 km southwest of Eschweiler, the construction work was interrupted for months and then continued so that the church could be completed in 1939. In the same year the pastoral care district Herz Jesu was established.

The benediction took place on November 12, 1939. Rector Leo Appelrath (* 1908 in Cologne-Klettenberg , † 1985 in Eschweiler) was the first pastor of the new pastoral care district from March 1940. From August 1952, when the pastoral care district was elevated to a parish, until August 1978 he was the first pastor. The "Pfarrer-Appelrath-Straße" is named after him. An organ was purchased in 1950, the kindergarten was built in 1954, the rectory was built in 1957, a new organ was acquired in 1981 and in 1989 the rectory rooms were set up in the basement of the church.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the parish became one of four Catholic parishes of the Community of Parishes (GdG) Eschweiler Mitte , then part of the parish of St. Peter and Paul.

On June 20, 2015, the church was desecrated . The reason for this was budget cuts. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche has been a listed building since March 5, 2020.
