Bergrath [ 'bɛʁkrɑ: t ] ( dialect : Bärschroot ) is a south-eastern part of Eschweiler in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia and is closely connected with Bohl . Since the middle of the 19th century, Bergrath has been divided into a north and a south half by a railway line. Since the “Antoniusstraße” level crossing was closed in 2003, the underpasses at “Grachtstraße” and “Kopfstraße” (maximum passage height 3.1 m) have been the only two connections between the two districts. A few meters east of the former level crossing there is still the narrow pedestrian underpass “Auf dem Höfchen”.

history

Bergrath was probably founded around 830 together with Volkenrath and Hastenrath by the Cologne church and, together with Röhe and Röthgen, has belonged to the Eschweiler office since the 16th century at the latest. In 1250 Bergrath is mentioned under the name Berchingrode. The catholic parish church St. Antonius and the Antonius chapel are worth seeing. This chapel from 1670 is the oldest church building in Bergrath. In the winter of 1904/1905 a Roman farmhouse was excavated on the slag heaps of the Nothberger mine near Bergrath. There were a large clay urn, sigillata shards, a bowl base with the words “COMITIALIS”, iron nails, hooks, clips and instruments, a mortar made of clay and one-handled jugs.

Residents

Bergrath with Bohl and Volkenrath had a total of 5468 inhabitants on December 31, 2016.
