The Canberra International Airport is the airport of the Australian capital Canberra . It is located about five kilometers east of the city center in the Pialligo district, about halfway to Queanbeyan and is a hub for flights to Eastern Australia and, in bad weather, also a replacement airport for flights to Melbourne and Sydney .

The airport is divided into three sectors: passenger terminal and general aviation on the west side, the former air force base on the east side and cargo terminal with a commercial zone on the north side. It has two slopes.

history

Passenger aircraft of Qantas Airways at the passenger terminal

An airstrip had been on the site of today's airport since the early 1920s, just a few years after Canberra was designated the capital. In 1939, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) took over the site, leasing parts of the area for civil aviation. In 1962 the airport was renamed RAAF Base Fairbairn . In 1998 the site was sold to the Capital Airport Group . In 1998 the Air Force division was leased back to the Ministry of Defense. The air base was finally closed in 2003, although a CL-604 squadron remained stationed there.

Accidents

On August 13, 1940, a RAAF Lockheed Hudson crashed immediately after take-off into a hill east of the airport, killing six passengers and four crew members. The armed forces commander and three ministers were among the victims. Aviation Secretary James Fairbairn was one of the victims and the air base was later named after him.

On May 7, 2003, a hangar at the VIP terminal collapsed . Twelve workers died, and there was also property damage to several cars.

Military use

In the north-eastern area, part of the area that was converted at the time has been leased back to the armed forces. The only airborne unit stationed at the Defense Establishment Fairbairn is the 34th Squadron . She uses the CL-604 and in April 2018 the first of three leased Falcon 7Xs arrived in Canberra.

Civil use

Four airlines operate from Canberra:

There were international scheduled flights to Fiji only in 2004 . On the other hand, individual charter companies fly abroad mainly during the holiday season.
