The Adelaide Airport is an international airport in Adelaide , Australia . The airport is located approximately six kilometers from the city center, next to the West Beach suburb . The airport is operated by the private Adelaide Airport Limited , which has had a long-term lease with the Australian state since 1998.
history
Adelaide's first airport was a 24-acre airfield built in the Hendon neighborhood in 1921. The small facility was used for airmail traffic between Adelaide and Sydney . Due to the significant increase in air traffic, Parafield Airport was established in 1927 in the suburb of the same name Parafield . As early as 1941, this airport was also unable to cope with the increasing demand in air traffic. It was then decided to build Adelaide Airport at West Torrens (now West Beach). Construction work began in 1947 and was completed in February 1955 with the opening.
Initially, only a large hangar served as a passenger terminal, which was used for domestic and regional traffic until 2005. The first international terminal was built in 1982.
Construction of the new terminal
Since the old terminal has been criticized because of its limited capacity and its lack of passenger boarding bridges, were between 1997 and 2005 260 million AUD the airport invested in the renovation. The renovation work was carried out by the Australian construction company Hansen Yuncken .
In 1997, proposals for a modern international terminal were submitted for the first time. The idea of a uniform terminal, in which domestic and international flights are handled, was created and was decided in the same year.
The new terminal was opened on October 7, 2005 by Prime Minister John Howard and Mike Rann , Prime Minister of South Australia . Shortly after the opening, the operator Adelaide Airport Limited announced that only international flights would be possible from the new terminal due to problems with the fuel pumps and underground pipes. These defects are also said to have been caused by rubble in the pipes. During this time, the procedure for domestic flights was regulated in the old terminal. On February 17, 2006, the terminal could finally be used for all flights.
The new terminal is around 850 meters long and can handle 27 flights and 3000 passengers per hour. It comprises 14 glass-sided passenger boarding bridges, 42 check-in counters and 34 shops. Free internet access via WLAN is available in the entire terminal.
