history

Jetstar Airways Boeing 717-200 (2006)

Jetstar began selling airline tickets in February 2004, with the first passenger flights following three months later on May 25th. Internationally, Jetstar flew for the first time on December 1, 2005. At that time, the fleet consisted exclusively of Boeing 717-200s with 122 seats, which were soon completely replaced by larger and more efficient Airbus A320s with initially 177 seats.

Also in December 2005, the airline's management announced its plans to develop Jetstar into the first low-cost airline to operate on long-haul routes. First you want to fly to destinations that are about ten hours away from Australia, but later also Europe and America . The order for the long-haul aircraft Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 787-8 was the first step in this expansion.

On December 13, 2004, the sister company Jetstar Asia Airways started its service based in Singapore . On November 14, 2007, the parent company Qantas Airways ordered 68 Airbus A320 and A321s and secured a further 40 options. The exact division between Jetstar Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways and Jetstar Pacific Airlines is not yet known.

Low-cost flights between Europe and Australia were planned for the end of 2009, but these were not started by the end of 2013. Possible destinations in Germany are Frankfurt am Main and Munich , further destinations would be Paris, Athens, Rome and Amsterdam. These destinations are to be connected to Sydney and Melbourne via Bangkok. The first flights to Rome or Athens were originally planned for the end of 2008, but the delay in the delivery of the Boeing 787-8 meant that these plans could not be implemented. The first 787 was only delivered to Jetstar in summer 2013, but routes to Europe are still not announced.

On July 12, 2012, the Japanese sister company Jetstar Japan , based in Tokyo, started operations. The parent company of Jetstar Airways, Qantas Airways , has a 33.3% stake in the company. The company mainly offers scheduled flights within Japan.

criticism

According to Jetstar Airways' on-board regulations, male passengers are not permitted to take a seat next to children traveling alone. This regulation caused criticism and indignation in August 2012 because of the associated general suspicion of pedophilia against men. The same rule can also be found at Qantas and Air New Zealand .
