East-West Airlines was founded in 1947 with funds from around 800 mainly small investors with the aim of combating "the city-based airline monopolies". The shares were immediately traded as an unlisted public company. During this early period, the workforce consisted of manager Basil Brown and maintenance engineer and workshop manager Cedric Wood. Wood had nine separate aircraft maintenance licenses. As a result, the company was able to conduct maintenance procedures on a minimal budget. East-West originally operated Australia's first regular mail delivery service between Tamworth , Port Macquarie and Newcastle with single-engine aircraft from the Tiger Moth . The company bought twin-engine Avro-Anson planes, which allowed it to carry more mail and passengers.

East-West acquired several Douglas DC-3s from 1953 . These 28-seat aircraft gradually replaced the smaller Avro. On October 31, 1993, the company was part of Ansett Australia .
