Jetstar Pacific Airlines (often abbreviated to Jetstar Pacific ) is a Vietnamese low-cost airline based in Ho Chi Minh City and based at Tan Son Nhat Airport . It is a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines and Qantas and belongs to the Jetstar Group.

history

Jetstar Pacific was founded as Pacific Airlines by a resolution of the Vietnamese government in 1991 . From 1996 she flew under the umbrella of the Vietnam Airlines Corporation. In 2005 the airline regained its independence and tried to be the first Vietnamese airline to assert itself in the low-cost flight segment. However, she wrote great losses.

Shortly thereafter, in June 2007, the Australian airline Qantas , which built up a low-cost subsidiary with Jetstar, entered the business and acquired an 18 percent stake in the partially privatized and loss-making airline. At the time, Pacific Airlines was the second largest airline in the country, largely due to the fact that Vietnam Airlines had a monopoly.

On November 14, 2007, Qantas ordered 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family and secured another 40 options. The exact division between Pacific Airlines, Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Asia Airways was not initially disclosed. It was later announced that there were plans for Jetstar Pacific to operate a total of 15 Airbus A320s by 2014.

In May 2008, Pacific Airlines was renamed Jetstar Pacific . IATA and ICAO abbreviations as well as the callsign were retained.

In December 2008 a first Airbus A320-200 was put into the fleet again; In 2005, units of this type had already been used at Pacific Airlines. It is a used machine that is leased from Aircastle . The aircraft had the aircraft registration VN-A195 and with 180 seats had the maximum seating for this aircraft type.

In 2009, Qantas' stake in Jetstar Pacific rose to 27 percent. The main shareholder with a stake of 70 percent was a state investment company SCIC (State Capital Investment Corporation) from Vietnam. The remaining shares were held by various other Vietnamese investors. Jetstar Pacific had grown strongly and in 2009 carried around 2 million passengers with a seat load factor of 85 percent. Jetstar Pacific carried out 42 flights a day for this, but the profit zone was still achieved.

Between 2010 and 2014, six more A320-200s were added to the fleet under leasing contracts, most of which had previously been used by other operators. In 2013, the last Boeing 737-400 was phased out and standardized on the Airbus A320 family common at Jetstar.

Vietnam Airlines has held 66.93 percent of Jetstar Pacific since February 2012, while the Qantas Group owns 30 percent . The remaining shares are held by various other Vietnamese investors.

Vietnam Airlines will continue to run the company under its previous name and thus pursue a two-brand strategy. As a foreign company, Qantas may for legal reasons hold a maximum of 49 percent in a Vietnamese airline. The State Capital Investment Corporation had already asked the government for permission in 2008 to sell its 70 percent stake because of the high deficits.

By October 2011, Jetstar Pacific was unable to establish profitable flight operations. For 2009 Jetstar Pacific had to post a loss of 31 million US dollars .

In June 2020 the restructuring and renaming to Pacific Airlines was announced.
