history

Qatar Airways Boeing 747-100SR in 1996

Foundation and first years

Qatar Airways was founded on November 22, 1993 on the initiative of the Al Thani royal family ; flight operations began on January 20, 1994. As initial equipment , Airbus A310-200s were purchased on the used aircraft market , and the new airline received two Boeing 727-200s from the government flight squadron Qatar Amiri Flight . Two Boeing 747-100SR were also acquired from All Nippon Airways .

After Qatar Airways had only flown in losses in the first years of its existence, in April 1997 a reorganization according to purely "western" standards and a new management, in which the royal family only owned 50% of the company shares. The new management also introduced a new fleet policy aimed purely at the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus . First the uneconomical Boeing 747-100SR was sold, followed by the 727 and finally the Airbus A310 and replaced with newly acquired models. In April 1997 the Airbus A300-600R joined the fleet and from February 1999 the medium- haul type A320-200 . For long-haul flights, Qatar Airways uses the A330-200 / 300 and A340-600HGW , with which it was the first customer.

2000s

In the passenger sector, sales rose by 47% in the 2003 financial year with a 35% increase in passengers. Administration and fleet management of the royal VIP fleet Qatar Amiri Flight are now also part of the Qatar Airways operations and also use their corporate design .

On May 30, 2007, Qatar Airways ordered 80 A350s from Airbus as its first customer , which together have a list price of 11.8 billion euros . The delivery began on December 22, 2014.

From autumn 2007, Qatar Airways also opened Boeing and ordered 30 Boeing 787-8s and five 777Fs . The 787-8 was first delivered on November 13, 2012.

With the takeover of an Airbus A300 from Korean Air that has been converted into a cargo aircraft , sales in the air cargo sector increased by 73%.

2010s

The first Qatar Airways A350-900 shortly after landing in Frankfurt on January 15, 2015

In June 2011 the head of Qatar Airways announced that he wanted to acquire a 35% stake in the Luxembourg cargo airline Cargolux for 150 to 200 million euros . With this, Qatar Airways wants to catch up with its competitors Etihad Airways and Lufthansa in the air freight business and at the same time expand its freight offer.

On November 15, 2011, Qatar Airways ordered another 55 aircraft from the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus . The order consists of 50 A320neos and five A380-800s .

On October 30, 2013, Qatar Airways became a full member of the oneworld aviation alliance , which was announced in early October 2012.

On November 20, 2013, Qatar Airways ordered Boeing 60 777X . The order is divided into ten 777-8 and 50 777-9. This makes Qatar Airways one of the 777X's first customers .

On September 16, 2014, Qatar Airways took delivery of the first of ten A380-800s on order from Airbus. There were months of delays because several deficiencies had to be eliminated beforehand. The aircraft was used from 10 October 2014 to London Heathrow .

On December 22, 2014, Qatar Airways received its first Airbus A350-900 . This makes it the world's first customer of this model. The first scheduled flight took place on January 15, 2015 from Doha to Frankfurt am Main .

On January 30, 2015, Qatar Airways bought 9.99% of the shares in International Airlines Group , the parent company of British Airways , Iberia , Vueling and Aer Lingus . In June 2016 this proportion was increased to 15.01%. In July 2016, Qatar Airways again used the UK's exit from the EU and the resulting favorable exchange rate to increase its stake to 20.01%.

In 2015, the subsidiary Al Maha Airways started flight operations.

Due to the delivery delays for Airbus ' new short-haul A320neo aircraft , Qatar Airways reduced the existing order by an as yet unknown number on June 3, 2016.

On September 2, 2016, Qatar Airways took a 10% stake in the LATAM Airlines Group as part of a capital increase .

On October 7, 2016, Qatar Airways ordered 30 Boeing 787-9s and ten more 777-300ERs . In addition, a letter of intent for 60,737 MAX 8 was signed.

On March 1, 2017, Qatar Airways leased four Airbus A350-900s from LATAM Airlines Brasil for one year in order to cope with the high number of passengers. The first machine has been in use since March 2nd.

On June 5, 2017, the United Arab Emirates , Saudi Arabia , Bahrain and Egypt broke off diplomatic relations with Qatar on charges of financing terrorism. Due to the closure of the airspace for Qatari airlines, Qatar Airways had to cancel routes to the countries mentioned. Flights to Europe must be rerouted through Iraq , Iran and Kuwait .

Since September 2017, Qatar Airways has held 49 percent of the shares in the Italian Meridiana .

In 2017, the airline introduced the so-called QSuite in the business class. This seat is arranged in the aircraft in the format 1-2-1 and has a lockable door as a special feature, which ensures additional privacy for the guest. The QSuite is to gradually replace the previous seats in business class on all wide-body aircraft.

Since 2020

At the beginning of February 2020, Qatar Airways announced the takeover of 49 percent of the shares in the Rwandan RwandAir . Shortly beforehand, the airline had already promised to purchase 60 percent of the shares and to operate the Bugesera International Airport , which is currently under construction .

criticism

Qatar Airways has come under international criticism for poor working conditions. According to the employment contract, pregnant employees can be dismissed due to pregnancy. Possession of alcohol, cigarettes or pork is another reason for dismissal, the crew quarters are monitored and female employees cannot meet men there, except for their husbands, brothers or fathers. The International Labor Organization has therefore upheld a complaint by the International Transport Union against Qatar Airways.

Logo and color scheme

The Qatar Airways logo is designed in the colors of the Qatar flag . It shows the airline's English name in the Optima script and the Arabic name in the Kufi script . The head of an oryx is depicted on the vertical tail of the Qatar Airways aircraft . The in-flight entertainment system , which is available on board the aircraft in all classes of transport , is also called "Oryx". Today the aircraft are painted light gray in the upper area and white underneath. The original color scheme was white with a wine-red ribbon window and tail unit.
