Etihad ( Arabic الاتحاد, DMG al-Ittiḥād 'Union') Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates , based in Abu Dhabi and based at the airport there . She is a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organization and founder of the aviation alliance Etihad Airways Partners . Etihad is wholly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. In the Skytrax Awards 2019, Etihad Airways, like Turkish Airlines, was deprived of a star, which is why it is only a 4-star airline.

history

Etihad Airways was founded in July 2003 by government decree by Chalifa bin Zayid Al Nahyan , the Emir of Abu Dhabi. AED 500 million (approximately US $ 136 million ) in capital has been provided by the government for the launch. Flight operations began on November 5, 2003 with a ceremonial flight to al-Ain . The first commercial flight to Beirut took place on November 12, 2003. In the first full year of operation, 2004, Etihad transported around 340,000 passengers. Three years later in 2007 it carried over 4.6 million passengers, in 2008 it was 6.0 million passengers.

On June 20, 2007, four Airbus A340-600 , five A330-200 and, for the first time, three A330-200F were ordered at the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport . In addition, an agreement was reached with Airbus to postpone the delivery of the four A380-800s that had been ordered . The delivery of the first machine was initially delayed from 2007 to mid-2008; it finally took place in 2014.

Since 2010

In December 2011 Etihad Airways acquired a 29.2% stake in the financially troubled Air Berlin, making it the largest single shareholder. There was also extensive cooperation, including a code share agreement and compliance with the respective frequent flyer programs. As part of this, Air Berlin relocated its route from Berlin to Dubai to Abu Dhabi on January 15, 2012. At the hub in Abu Dhabi, Air Berlin passengers could then switch to Etihad connections. In September 2013, Etihad's European agency moved into its new headquarters in Berlin.

In July 2012, Etihad entered into a collaboration with Air France-KLM . The creation of a joint venture is not excluded. A code share and an interline agreement with Aer Lingus started in the third quarter of 2012 . On August 1, 2013, Etihad Airways acquired 49% of JAT Airways . In the course of this, it was renamed Air Serbia. In October 2013, the Indian government approved the 24% stake in Jet Airways for 20.6 billion rupees (about 246 million euros). In November 2013, Etihad Airways took over a 33.3% stake in the Swiss regional airline Darwin Airline , which subsequently changed its market presence to Etihad Regional . In December 2013 Etihad Airways acquired a 49% stake in Alitalia in the form of a capital increase of 300 million euros. In October 2014, Etihad Airways founded its own aviation alliance called Etihad Airways Partners .

With the bankruptcy of Alitalia in May 2017 and the total loss of the stake, the ambitious growth policy was considered to have failed; After the appointment of a new CEO, Etihad sold its shares in Darwin Airline in July 2017. At the beginning of August 2017, Etihad then canceled the financial support it had initially promised in writing to Air Berlin. As a result, Air Berlin was forced to file for bankruptcy (see Air Berlin ).

Since 2020

Due to the sharp decline in the number of passengers in global aviation due to the Covid-19 pandemic and requirements of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad temporarily suspended its passenger flights on March 25, 2020. Evacuation and cargo flights are also permitted.

The company is managed by SE Mohamed Mubarak Fadhel Al Mazrouei. It consists of the following areas:

Incidents

In the flight operations of Etihad Airways there have been no incidents with significant personal injuries, but one incident outside of normal flight operations: On November 15, 2007, a brand new Airbus A340-600 was so badly damaged during an engine test on the Airbus site in Toulouse that the Machine had to be written off. The A340-600, which should have been delivered to Etihad Airways six days later, unintentionally started moving and rolled into a concrete wall. This completely separated the cockpit section from the fuselage and fell about five meters to the ground on the other side of the wall. Five of the nine inmates were injured.

Sponsorship

Etihad Airways invested in a three-year sponsorship deal with Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1 . Etihad was also the main sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , which was held for the first time in 2009. Furthermore, Etihad is a sponsor of the sports soccer ( Etihad Stadium in Melbourne , Manchester City ), rugby ( Harlequins ) as well as curling and golf .

Etihad is still the advertising medium for the second largest airworthy model airplane in the world, the replica of an Airbus A380 .
