Air Astana (proper spelling air astana; Kazakh / Russian Эйр Астана ) is the national airline of Kazakhstan based in Almaty and based at Almaty Airport .
history
Air Astana was founded in September 2001 as the successor to the insolvent Air Kazakhstan . The Kazakh state holds 51% of the company through the state-owned company Samruk-Kazyna and 49% is held by the British aerospace and defense group BAE Systems . The first flight of Air Astana took place on May 15, 2002 with a Boeing 737 from Almaty to the Kazakh capital Astana. On board were the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and, as a representative of BAE Systems, the former CEO Sir Richard Evans.
Air Astana employs its own ground staff at the airports of the two largest Kazakh cities, Almaty and Nur-Sultan ( called Astana until 2019 ). At all other airports, the airline is looked after and processed by handling agents.
In 2006 Air Astana acquired its own departure control system, a further developed form of the RTB system developed by British Airways under the name Amadeus SwiftCheck . Airports around the world are now in a position to check in to Air Astana flights using this check-in system.
In 2007 the airline pushed ahead with expanding its fleet. In February, the airline acquired its first wide-body aircraft, a Boeing 767-300ER , followed by another aircraft, two Airbus А320s and two Airbus А321s . Air Astana operates since December 2007 Nomad Club its own frequent flyer program, but is also a partner of the frequent flyer program Miles & More of Lufthansa , Air Astana award miles can be collected with the on the routes Astana-Frankfurt and Almaty-Frankfurt.
In 2010 Air Astana carried around 2.568 million passengers ( seat occupancy : 68 percent) and 16,392 tons of cargo. The profit rose to around 91 million US dollars. Air Astana currently serves around 50 national and international destinations worldwide.
The first Embraer 190 was added to the fleet in early 2011 . The regional airliner gradually replaced the Fokker 50 and is used on Central Asia and domestic routes from Almaty. Three more turboprops were decommissioned between June and August 2012, the last two remaining Fokker 50s followed in spring 2013. Air Astana took second place behind Aeroflot from Russia in the Skytrax “Best Airline Eastern Europe” award in mid-2011 .
In February 2012, Air Astana ordered as part of the largest contract in its history with Boeing four 767-300ERs and three 787-8s worth 1.3 billion US dollars . The first two 767-300ERs were delivered to Air Astana at the end of 2013, they replaced older models of the same type in the fleet.
In April 2014, the airline received approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency to expand its European routes. According to the European Aviation Security Authority, the airline has proven that its security systems and procedures comply with EU security standards. Nevertheless, according to the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union , she was not allowed to fly to any destinations in the European Union with her Embraer 190 until December 2015 .
On June 17, 2015, Air Astana ordered seven aircraft from the Airbus A320neo family , which are leased from ALC . There are two A320neo, one A321neo and four A321LR with increased range, making Air Astana the first customer of the A321LR. The first A321neo was delivered in January 2018.
